Regularly using cystease with varied results.

Re: Blocked cats

Have only seen amitriptyline used in a couple of cases, and they were quite severe regularly blocked cats. Seem to remember hearing that it can exacerbate heart conditions though-anyone else heard this?? Can cause some sedative effects though so from what I gather its a treatment generally used when none of the others are working as effectively.

Re: Blocked cats

We seem to have a run of blocked cats at the moment but they keep coming back. Normally we catheterise them, flush bladder, have them on metacam & hypovase, move onto RCW urinary and then remove catheter after 2-3 days, but the last 3 cats keep blocking back up and then having to be catheterised again.

Any other tips? Is dibenyline better than hypovase or should we use them both at once? Has anyone used amytriptilene for this??

Re: Blocked cats

Tend to leave them in for around 24-48 hours, especially for the cats who have regular recurrence and some degree of irritation when catheter was placed to prevent further trauma if needs doing again the next day. Meds are usually metacam, dibenyline and hypovase and then wet urinary diet/recommendation of water fountains etc.

Re: Blocked cats

as long as there is no difficulty with passing the catheter or no renal compromise I prefer to leave the catheter out- Dont know if thats correct but have seen a lot of cats which have been really irritaed with indwelling cath. If cath stays in we connect to bag and keep in for 24/48 hours case dependant. All cats go on i/v fluids and stay in until the are urinating freely. analgesia, a/b's are case dependant. They usually go home on cystease +/- dibylienne.

Re: Blocked cats

Depends on the ease of passing the catheter. Would leave catheter overnight if it was difficult (you know the ones when you can feel the stones grating), but never any longer. Always onto the RCW high dilution diet. Anti-inflam/analgesia would be dependant on kidney function. S/C fluids at time of catheterisation or iv if kidney function affected. Dependant on vet as to whether abs are given (read recently that there are no reasons to give them with a straight forward blockage/catheterisation?)

Re: Blocked cats

We leave catheter in for usually 2 days or until urine looks better, eg no haem, we always have them attached through a urinary collection set into a bag, also on fluids for this time to flush things through, Meds will depend on how they are and what the problem was, might include abs, pain relief, hypovase, dantrium or urinary food. Have ocas used cartrophen injs - though seen some bad reactions, or cystaid caps for long termers with bladder trouble.
