I remember that some of the happiest times of my childhood were spent playing with friends on our own. I would hate to deprive my children of that fun. I worry myself sick when the kids are out playing (mine are 6 and 4) but luckily we live in a quiet area, on a cul-de-sac, with loads of families about. And fortunately 'weirdos' that are strangers to the child are actually very rare. Most abuse happens within families.

Re: kids............huge headache

[quote user="Bouncyfi"]

I agree, to an extent though.. I would never let my boy out at his age - he's 6.. not because I dont trust him, it's because there are FAR too many weirdos out there.. and reckless drivers! My son was ran over by a car at 2yrs old and we very nearly lost him!! he got out of his dads hands and ran out.. luckily the car wasn't going too fast, but it still nealry killed him (coma for 10 days, brain damage/swelling, broken bones - the lot!) like I said, we were lucky it wasnt a 'boy racer' who knocked him down.. we hear of too many kids being killed on the roads!

Re: kids............huge headache

I think its the same with any child, they intend to go one place and end up somewhere else, without thinking that parents (even step-parents) could be worried where they are. I don't think they do it out of callousness just head-filled-with-other-things-ness!

I have a rule with my daughter that she has to phone if she changes houses, I have no problem with her going elsewhere, just so I know where she is. We also have a rule that she has to be in when the street lights come on, which works pretty well, they come on before its dark, giving her enough time to get back. If she's staying at a friend's house and wants to be later than this, then she phones so I can come & get her.
