Just wondering what your policy is for grey squirrels brought in by members of public? Think the law states them as vermin, must not be released!!! Does this mean they are to be euthanased?

Re: grey squirrels

[quote user="Caro Laithwaite"]

A deadly squirrel disease which only affects reds could see the species disappear from some of its last remaining English strongholds within a decade, according to scientists from London's Queen Mary University.

Previously scientists believed that grey squirrels were wiping out native reds simply by taking over their habitats, but an international study has blamed a virus which they transmit to the red population, killing them within a fortnight.

Scientists studied Cumbria and Norfolk, where the virus had broken out, and compared them with Scotland and Italy, where there was no trace of the disease, and found the reds' population area decline was up to 25 times worse where they were exposed to the disease.

A selective, small-scale cull of grey squirrels has been achieved in Kielder Forest, Northumberland, after experts analysed the red squirrel refuge and identified four areas through which where greys could get access.

Squirrel refuges

There are now plans to apply the approach to England's other 15 squirrel refuges in Cumbria, Northumberland, North Yorkshire and Merseyside.

Red squirrels have been in Britain for the last 10,000 years and are protected under the UK's Wildlife and Countryside Act, while domineering greys - which appear unaffected by the virus - were introduced from the United States more than 100 years ago.

Tony Sainsbury, lecturer in wild animal health at the Zoological Society of London, added: "The cases seen by ZSL's national red squirrel disease surveillance programme clearly demonstrate the severity and debilitating nature of the squirrel poxvirus disease on red squirrels.

"Given that the grey squirrel is an introduced species, and therefore the disease has occurred as a consequence of human action, the onus is very much on us to look for practical solutions to control the disease and protect red squirrels from this fatal disease.

"Our work concludes that targeted control is the most viable way forward."

No the Greys aren't native but they have been here for years and have already displaced the Reds in most places, so it would be an impossible job to cull them all and allow re-colonisation of the Reds. (And i'm sure they are also necessary in seed dispersal)

Rats are carriers of diseases, as far as i'm aware grey squirrels aren't, please correct me if i'm wrong!

No the Greys aren't native but they have been here for years and have already displaced the Reds in most places, so it would be an impossible job to cull them all and allow re-colonisation of the Reds. (And i'm sure they are also necessary in seed dispersal)

Plus they're very cute, love watching them in my garden

Re: grey squirrels

[quote user="MissVetNurse"]

I'm expecting a lot of abuse for this......

but, IMHO they are vermin, same as pigeons....

I pose the question....

What would you do if someone brought a sewer rat in for treatment?

Totally agree grey squirrels aren't even native to this country FFS

An exemption from the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 requirement that states the grey squirrel, as a non-native species, cannot be released back into the wild can be gained by special licence from English Nature. I expect Tiggywinkles would have one?
