How do people enforce it? Personally, i do not think that the dog one is really enforced - how many stray dogs do you get in without collars - we used to get quite a few as people did not think them necc. when in home environment but if they escaped then the dogs would be breaking the law!! I would think it more practical for the dogs and cats to be, by law, microchipped as like people say, the cats will loose the collar very easily - mine go through loads (When they are actually awake enough to go outside!) and they are normally found in my neghbours garden when he hacks back all the bushes!

Re: Cats compulsory collars

I don't have address on Jacks tag, was always under the impression it's not a good idea from a security point of view? I have my surname, home no, mob no, vets no and 'i am microchipped'.

Re: Cats compulsory collars

Jack ALWAYS wears a collar with an id tag (with 3 phone numbers on it cos i'm paranoid!)! Even at home, in case he escapes. But with a cat it's different because they loose them so frequently. The thought of vets not checking for chips is shocking! It takes two seconds!

Re: Cats compulsory collars

Collers with names, address & phone. we had a pet found by a client 300 miles away on bank holiday follwed his dog. couldnt contact council etc Bank holiday.
Really. That's awful - it is the first thing we do with EVERY stray animal. We routinely chip parrots and tortoises - so those also get scanned. We have reunited an african grey parrot with its owner via a chip!

Really? I would have thought that that was pretty much standard procedure with any stray animal.

If collars are tight enough (only 2 fingers loose) and a quick-release type, they are very unlikely to cause a problem. Placed properly, you can hardly see a cat's collar within the fur. Unfortunately a lot of owners put it onto the fur, not the neck! And the loose ones annoy the cat much more!

It would be lovely if all cats were microchipped - I especially recommend it for indoor cats as they often don't wear collars and, if they do get out, are far more likely to get lost! But unfortunately most aren't chipped - so at least with a collar and disc they have a chance of being returned!

Re: Cats compulsory collars
I doubt it is true. Cats are not the same as dogs in the eyes of the law so would say it is verbal spam.
I am with Carolyn on this one. As well as the fact, my cats used to all wear collars until one of them caused themselves an injury - managed to get collar half around front leg which caused a would under her right shoulder, due to collar getting caught.

So, for that reason, I feel any cat with access to outdoors should NOT be wearing a collar, we all know how inquisitive cats are - more likely to get themselves in bother by wearing a collar and more likely to get caught, fatally in a hedge for example by thier collar and hang themselves, so for that reason alone, I would say that is a load of nonsense.

Re: Cats compulsory collars

I doubt it is true.
