Only recently starting having appraisals. Can't say the ones i've had are particularly useful. If i have something to say, i'll say it rather than wait for one of these time wasting meetings.

Wow! Most of us can only dream of such things... on a more serious note though, do you ever feel that the employer/employee line is being crossed with stuff like this? I suppose you get CPD so its not just a holiday.. I remember feeling uncomfortable even when my boss bought me a bag of chips!! Would you feel less able to speak up if you came across a problem in practice?

He tends to keep his distance most of the time, but he can be quite abrupt without realising it, which is inclind to remind you he is our employer! But we are a small practice so you are always going to be closer as we only have one other part time vet.

first time appraisal many years ago at tp. Bets were laid who would walk out the room alive as we both disliked each other. I took 3 or 4 hrs up there all we discussed was the reasons was he should say thank you and his justyfying why he didnt.

Second appraisal different practice few years later... total joke.

Third appraisal same place l refused to take it based on the last one.. hn tried to get me to go l refused. She said if she came round to my house would l do it.. fine have a coffee. A coffee and chat about life not work she asked if l could fill in the paperwork..l refused so she did it. She asked if l could sign it... l refused as l hadn't read it and wasn't interested ... she signed it.

That was my last appraisal as far as l am concerned they are a total joke and l won't waste my time with them.

[/quote]Oh yes.... we don't get anything that grand but the boss does make sure he thanks his nurses for all their help. The assisstant isn't too bad for that either.

I also work in a small practice and we don't run appraisals as standard but as HVN I try to talk to each of my trainees privately and let them air any problems or to congratulate then when I think they've done a great job.

I remember when I had an appraisal at another practice, it was nothing short of a character assassination. Left me with a really nasty taste in my mouth. A few months later I was made redundant even though I wasn't the last nurse in. Guess your face can't fit everywhere eh?

Iv only had 2 in 12 years! have asked for one but thier idea of one is asking 'how are you doing' during routine surgery.

and if you answer 'ok thanks, how are you?' thats it over!

I had my appraisal/ review recently but I had to ask for it!! Dont usually do them but I wanted to find out how I was doing as I had been a bit unclear as to my role in practice.
It went really well, boosted my confidence, proved I was doing a good job and cleared up what my responsibilities are. I did ask about money but was told the practice couldnt afford pay rises this year, despite the boss having just got back from a 5 week holiday in south africa Got the boss to agree to review salary in six months so will see what happens!

I've been in the country for nearly two years. First job I had here, worked for a SA group and being in the job for 11 months got told no salary increases due to economic climate. (This same small animal group had previously used Foot and Mouth as an excuse). My current job didn't give me an appraisal as I had only been in for 2 months, but had given me a positive 3 month review. This practice policy is to give everyone an annual review.

Not an apprailsial, but (what I thought was) a pooh interview, I drove away thinking thats it, I'm over it I'm going to go and stack supermarket shelves. I was in tears I thought I stuffed up so bad...I got the job.

Yup, this is the mentallity I have to put up and work with on a daily basis, its soul destroying when all you want to do is come into work do the best you can do. Then you get told your a hindrance to the practice coz you earn x amount of pounds??!! (oh and believe me the wages arn't all that!)

I've had 2, yes 2 appraisals in the last 16 years LOL

The first one was in 2002 when I told em exactly what I thought of em' didn't go down too well but I was sick of being used and taken for granted. The most recent one was hilarious, even though there was nothing to have a go at me for as I do my job VERY well and have paid for all my own CPD and home study courses I was told I cost the practice a lot??!! It provided me with entertainment for all of 15 minutes before I reslised that they where being serious!

I'm glad you've had a positive outcome from it, I wished the same would happen for me

Good stuff! Glad you're feeling happier about everything. My last practice never carried out appraisals, but carried out correctly, they can really help with morale and keep staff motivated.
