I've worked at my practice for nearly 4 years now and have recently qualified as a VCA so hopefully this will help me with my college work!!
But I'm still finding it all a bit daunting

Re: Starting VN training... eek!!

Well when I originally got the job it was just 14 hours a week with some reception. Soon after they offered me full time but were having loads of building work done so they explained I wouldn't be able to train in the near future. I was happy with that because I just wanted to work with animals and figured it would give me time to get experience. Plus I didn't get the desired grades at school so it gave me time to do the VCA. Last year it was difficult because we had people on maternity and sick leave so it was all a bit much! Plus I bought my first house and I've had really bad neighbours who have been absolutely awful, so up until now I haven't felt ready to start because pretty much all of my spare time has been taken up with filling in diaries, taking photos and phone calls to the police, council and letting agents!

But now eventually we have a really cool surgery and have the training status back, and my neighbours are going to be evicted too so its all good!

God feel like I've written a little life story lol!

It depends if there are many other trainees before you in line to train, and also to check you are committed before going ahead.

Re: Starting VN training... eek!!

so you applied for a trainee nurse job at the practice but they have not put you forward for the training untill 4yrs later? Is this normal procedure? and did you know that before you accepted the job?

Sorry for the questions - not being funny just curious as im wanting to go down this route myself. Lots of luck! x

Re: Starting VN training... eek!!

Congrats and good luck at college

Prepare to be overwhelmed with information that seems like it will never stick....BUT IT WILL! trust me

I met some of my best friends at college, had the best time and LOVED lessons, I think I'm a little bit of a geek at heart lol. I loved it, everything I'd learned before becoming a student all clicked into place like ohh thats what that is and I loved every minute

Don't worry about asking questions and researching subjects

Re: Starting VN training... eek!!

Aw thanks everyone for your nice messages! I'm feeling a bit better about it now!

I've just been a trainee nurse since I started, one of the underdogs who gets the crappy jobs like cleaning the x-ray developer and mixing up the chemicals lol!!

My favourite thing is dentals and I did the Dental Leadership course a couple of years ago. I've also been on a couple of dental CPD's and have started doing dental clinics for clients advising on home care. I have been considering doing the BVNA certificate in dentistry after qualifying... well I best not get too far ahead of myself, got to get throught the next two years yet!!!

I'm so scared that I just want be able to learn it all (especially after listening to colleagues revising for their level 2!!!!). I had trouble remembering things at school but I guess that was a long, long time ago now. Really want to do this but fear my brain is just not capable!

Re: Starting VN training... eek!!

I've been nursing for over 3 years now, but have been in my first actual student nurse position for the last 7 weeks.
Problems with enrolment (see other threads) mean I can't yet start clocking up my hours, nor start my portfolio (and this is really getting me down).
I should be starting college in September too, like you, but not sure if it depends on the enrolment going through by then.
Hope you have a lovely time training, and learning at college.
I'm in a very small practice and the nurses are all lovely and keen to help and give advice, as are most of the vets.

Re: Starting VN training... eek!!

if you have been in practice for 4 years then you really have nothing to worry about!! most of the girls on my courses had only been in practice less than a year- 1 of them had started the month before her training!! if you already have done vca raining then that will help but i found experience is what helped me the most. don't worry, the tutors are usually ex nurses or mad vets and don't expect you to know loads of stuff- they are there to teach you it!! enjoy!

Re: Starting VN training... eek!!

Hi Snic, am starting my ANA course at college next Monday and am really nervous about it!
