Hello,
we did a piece in Vet Times about an increase in experiments on animals (below) and I'd also like to cover it in VN Times. It would be great to be able to include quotes from VNs responding to the issue.
Please feel free to message me

Re: A sharp rise in experements on animals

Nothing to do with what Joe is researching, but just wanted to share....

I read once before and saw very graphic pictures, of animals undergoing terrible suffering in the name of beauty for humans. The video footage was truely horrific and an image I will never, ever forget as long as I live.

Gillette & L'Oreal.

I have never, ever, bought ANY of their products as a result of that.

Re: A sharp rise in experements on animals

I think the reporting on animal experiments needs to be clearer. I am completely against animal experiments for the benefits of species other than the one being tested on. However, I'm not so opposed to experimentation on, for example, horses for the benefit of horses. But then again, if the experimentation is causing suffering how can it be morally and ethically acceptable?

I am a member of the BUAV and find some of the details they publish truley appalling. How can we possibly call ourselves civilised when we allow such barbaric behaviour to occur [and I include not just animal experimentation here, but the skinning of animals alive, milking of bile from bears, dancing bears, bully fighting etc]

Some of you may find "The Monkey Wars" [have tissues handy an interesting read and Peter Singers' work.

Re: A sharp rise in experements on animals

It is interesting that not more of us have commented on this subject. People must have opinions. I wonder if it is because of how unpleasant some people can be. After the vegan/veggie issue was discussed I stayed off the forum for a while because I was so disappointed by the comments. Some people were not very nice!

Re: A sharp rise in experements on animals

Hello, thanks for your thoughtful response.
Saskia, I haven't been able to locate the message from you in May. I'm really sorry if you feel ignored, it wasn't intentional. I don't always get as much chance as I would like to visiting forums etc.

I have major concerns about the numbers of animals used in labs and the experiments carried out. Millions of animals suffer in UK laboratories every year, yet it is known that the physiological differences between species can produce dangerously misleading results. There are many examples of this and it may actually lead to advances in medical progress being held back. Shocking too is the fact that there was a dramatic increase in the use of pigs (+114%), turkeys (+135%) and fish (+85%). In fact, fish, are now subjected to more than 605,000 experiments – 16.6 per cent of the total. Animal Aid claims that most fish experiments are categorised under a typically vague Home Office heading of ‘fundamental biological research’. It is a fact that fish feel pain.

[/quote]

Not all experiments are designed to test something on an animal that is designed for another's treatment, etc. I am a researcher & a RVN, hold a home office personal license and the animals that I use in my studies are included in the published figures. The research that I carry out is solely designed to improve the welfare of the species/breed that I work with and has to be carried out using that species/breed in order for the results to be valid. The studies that I carry out are purely behavioural but - rightly so - my experimental protocol has to go through an ethics committee and be approved/comply with or exceed home office guidelines/regulations inorder to carried out because some of the things that I do cause suffering to the animals concerned. I welcome discussion in this area!

Re: A sharp rise in experements on animals

If you print this I have to ask that my name is not in print.
