I've suffered from unexplained infertility for years and the Consultant decided I had PCOS due to me being a hairy monkey and a little overweight. Had a patency test and various blood tests and they came back blank so the Dr decided to do an ex. lap. to see if I had PCOS and she said if I did they would pop the cysts. When I woke up they'd done an ovarian diathermy.

I can now get pregnant but have had two miscarriages [it looks like the last one was caused by me taking a lot of ibuprofen due to illness before I knew I was pregnant, and ended up with me in hospital due to blood loss] NSAIDs are known to cause miscarriage.

Just had another lot of bloods done and my FSH is high. If your FSH is above a certain level then NHS will not consider IUI or IVF. At the moment it looks like I would have to go private if I want to have any kids.I started trying when I was 31 which I didn't think was too old, it's now 7yrs later and the Drs are saying well you are a bit old. So my suggestion to people thinking of trying to conceive is start seeking advice from your Drs as early as possible, it took 2yrs for my Dr to believe me about my anovulation and refer me.

My acupuncturist and Foresight have been far more helpful than the NHS.

Re: PCOS

nope - the only thing different is the dianette (had last dose on Sunday). Not to mention the horrible bumps/acne i get in my personal area and we're not just talking pubic :( It's a freaking nightmare. My GP and gynae have done swabs to see if it's part of the yeast infections i was getting but nothing comes up. yet they clear up when i take fluconazole on a 7 day course. It's flipping rediculous. no one has any answers and it takes weeks/months for the NHS to sort out my appointments so i end up having to go private and spend over £600 to get the treatment i need.
Find out what your local authorities position is on assisted conception. When I was diagnosed I was advised that I may need IVF in the future.

I did not marry my husband until I was in my mid 30's, I went through all the various pre IVF treatments that were suggested by my consultant; which for info gave me all the side effects from hair loss, night sweats to murderous mood swings.

Eventually despite medical and surgical treatment my consultant advised that IVF was my only hope. To cut a long and painful story short I was on the list for a few months when I got a 4 line letter from the hospital to advise that; as my husband had a child from a previous relationship I was not entitled to NHS treatment and my name was removed from the list, they kindly sent a price list for private treatment in the same envalope! I am an RVN for ****** sake £4000 minimum cost is hardly in my price range. We were up front with my consultant from day one re my husbands child, but it was never mentioned.

I really don't want to upset anyone but forewarned is forearmed, I could have made different decisions re buying a house etc if I had known that I might need that kind of cash.

I have since met people who's local authority don't fund IVF at all, or only 1 cycle or have restictive age policies. Ask your consultant what your position is get educated, it can only help to make informed decisions.

Re: PCOS

[quote user="Rachel Jayne"]

I've recently been diagnosed with PCOS.. But my GP said I was in a 'grey area'??

My hubby and I have been trying for another baby for 3yrs, I CAN get pregnant, but I have suffered 4 miscarrages.. I've had so many tests etc, had 2 scans in 4mths recently and it shows one ovary larger than the other, and both with multiple cysts.. docs confused as my hormone levels are normal.. I have no symptoms, she says pcos affect 'getting pregnant' but I dont seem to have a problem! going to see a specialist in september... so annoying as I want an explination to my miscarrages and also if I can have another healthy pregnancy (I have a 6yr old)
