Hello Beth,

Yes, I have loads of papers and articles (64 in fact). I'm fairly sure you don't want them all. I have 15 references available for the practical application of feline facial pheromones (Feliway) looking at improving welfare, urine marking, transport, settling cats in new environments, FIC, use in the practice etc.. + some nice reviews which might help you. If you can give me your address i’ll put them on a CD and put them in the post.

Hello Sally,

In the trial run by Lincoln University D.A.P. was proven to reduce the intensity of fear suffered as a result of firework exposure i.e. there was a reduction in trembling, cowering, hiding etc… during fireworks. I am happy to send you a copy of the paper is you would like more information.

If you have clients whose dogs show serious problems i.e. a noise phobia rather than firework fear, I understand it is recommended that you consider using one of the memory blocking drugs along side D.A.P to manage the problem in 2009. You can then talk to them about further treatment and behavioural therapy in January.

Sarah Health and Jon Bowan are the real experts in this area. If you would like any fact sheets or anything about managing firework phobias I would recommend you call there assistant Kim on 01244 371 473. She is very knowledgeable and should be able to send you anything you need or just have a chat if you have some questions.

Does anyone else have anything to add? What are your experiences using D.A.P. to help dogs with firework fears?

How effective is DAP for fireworks?

Tried Valarin and skullcap and it did nothing for my dog last year.

Hercules was fine with fireworks until one went off over our head during a walk and now he hides in my walldrobe! It's just about big enough for one of the cats let alone a full grown staffordshire bull terrier.

Thats awful Ruby You should complain to them.

I look after a yorkshire terrier once every year for 2 weeks while their owners are away on holiday, she had a bad experience in kennels once and her owners never brought her back to them. Poor dog was traumatisied.

Hard to know how to trust, probably best way is to arrive at the kennels unnannounced before you decide on one to choose or better still, speak to owners who had had their pets there before. Handy for future reference I guess!

Kennels were not very forthcoming with info.

Had a number of probs as well as the behavioural issues.

When they were brought out to us , the handles of their leads had been totally chewed away to nothing.

Their dog bed was also brought back to us folded in half , it wasnt until we got it home that we found all the chewed up bits of lead - they had either been vomitted up or passed as diarrhoea and were all stuck in a crusty dried up green goo all over the top of the bed.

Needles to say we wont be using this kennels again!

Hi Lucy.

Dont know if you still need stories. I have a 4yr old Border Collie who i have been training to do agility. he is brilliant when he wants to be but has a real problem with concentrating and focusing on the job in hand. We had a practice talk on DAP and it as recommended that he should try a collar for his concentration ( i had never thought of using it this way). I was sceptical at first but persisted for a few months and am pleased to say it makes a difference. One month i forgot to change it and he was a real little sod at training- it did not click what it was until i realised it was due to be changed. Now i change it every 4wks without fail.

Also my collleague uses them for her 8yr old lab who used to run upto other dogs then growl and run away- now he goes over all excited to play. We recommend them all the time at work.

I introduced felifriend also at work- its brill when you spray it you can see all the cats noses go up in the air!

Are you still looking for cases?

I used a combo of DAP diffuser and collar on one of my dogs after she came out of boarding kennels last year.

My lovely , happy friendly "in your face" whippet had been transfomed into a quivering nervous wreck during her stay in kennels , she had been into the same kennels the year before and was fine when she came out so i dont know what happened but i get the feeling that there was an "event" that scared the life out of her as she came back with cuts on her back legs , to me it looked like they had been caused by her trying to escape from something.

She had also become very sound sensitive and started to soil indoors overnight.

On went the collar and in went the plug in........

Hooray - back to the bouncy happy dog that she was.

At our practice we use both feliway and Dap plug ins in the kennel/prep areas and we have just started to use the felifriend which has produced some amazing effects on fractious cats.

Our practice also deals with a small dog rescue charity who take on a lot of ex puppy farm brood bitches and after reading all the Dogs trust research info i am very keen to recommend the DAP collars to all new owners of these dogs as they are all very afraid of the world outside the confines of breeding kennels.( i have to pitch the advice at new owners as the charity funds are tight so the new owners are asked to cover the cost of the collars themselves)

We try to use it as much as possible, seems to make a difference, I'm certainly impressed....the kitties seem more at ease with it...however they are in the cat only environment so too much of a good thing can't be bad?

We regularly have cats falling asleep on consult tables its fab

Like i said she's fine outside the house and never had any problems at all. Think part of her issue is boredom which then leads to distruction... no idea why she was rehomed which doesn't help!! Will consider collar for PAT work but i wouldn't be doing it with her if i didn't think she could cope!!

I, too, love DAP and swear by it!! Don't think there is a product which I recommend more.

Collar would be definately beneficial as it helps calms them in any situation that they meet out of the house. The diffuser works to keep the house a happy place, but what happens when they go outside?? They meet lots of new & exciting things and they have nothing to reassure them thats its all OK. It would mean that your friends wouldn't need a diffuser in their houses either - remember that a diffuser needs about 1 week in a house to reallt diffuse through it and make a real difference. The spray is handy in this situation but only lasts approx 45 minutes, so you would need to be topping it up regularly when outside.

I swear by DAP - rescued a 9month old lab x pointer from Dogs trust approx 6months ago now and have had the DAP plug in and on every moment since - yesterday when i upstairs to see her at lunchtime so had trashed my kitchen - everything pulled of the sides and cupboard doors chewed etc... Wasn't until i'd cleared up the mess and calmed down that i noticed the DAP was empty!!! Stupid me had forgot to replace it - and i swear she only trashed the place because it wasn't there!! I take the spray with us anywhere we go, staying with friends etc... and a couple of friends i vist have DAP in thier homes for their dogs and i swear she settles at these homes quicker than any of the others i visit!! Just about to put her through Pets As therapy training and was considering using a collar for the visits do you think it would help?? She is fine out of house but wondered if it wuld calm/make her more settled??
