I don't think it matters which dept. of the RCVS deal with complaints VN section or otherwise, it is still the RCVS and in my mind it is still a major conflict of interest!

I appreciate what you are saying but I have never been happy or comfortable with the whole arrangement, it is like nurses and doctors being governed by the same body, lives would be put at risk as nurses would be even more worried about 'blowing the whistle' than they are now. Unfortunately vet nurses will be even more worried about the consiquences of 'blowing the whistle' next year and so I can see it potentally having a serious detremental effect on the profession as unscrupulous vets will be allowed to get away with all sorts!

P.S. sorry to all of the many decent moral vets out there! If you are in that catagory I hope you would agree :-)

Surely there must be some way of becoming self regulating. I Have always felt it is not in the best interests of the profession to have vets and nurses regulated by the same governing body....who do you think will be favoured if a nurse feels there is an issue that needs addressing with regards to a vets conduct. In my experience the RCVS have take the vets word for gospel and told the nurse to wind her neck in and crawl back under the stone from whence she came!! There are practices out there that I hate with a passion and other nurses think they are great and vice versa - a lot of the clashes come down to personality (and sometimes lack of!) instead of name calling maybe we could come up with something a bit more constructive. How about something along the lines of the 'Michelin stars' with different categories for different sorts of practices ie a practice may score stars for training (obviously those not training would score zilch) stars for staff retention, stars for qualified staff, and stars for friendly vets and any other category that would be useful but absolutely no personal comments which could be misconstrued / actionable - maybe that would give prospective employees some sort of idea as to what the practice was like?

I agree attitudes need to change - and sometimes that may be from both sides (why cant we all be on the same side now and again? ) - I do find it worrying that some of the recently graduated vets (and dare I say it some recently qual nurses) have an absolutely stinking attitude but I do wonder what makes them that way - is it that some of them are just genetically programmed to be absolute b******s or is it a result of years at vet school/ nurse training. I have worked for some real gits in my time but some of the new batch are really malicious. (bit like the gremlins films but not funny)

It is important that the public do not lose confidence in the veterinary profession - if they do it is ultimately the patients that suffer as they are less likely to be presented for treatment.

Re: vet surgeon act review

Many years ago l did a name and shame Big A had the screaming heaby jeebies as the person couldnt reply so spoilysport Arlo bounced the post

Re: vet surgeon act review

[quote user="sal the 1st"]

OOOh get me doing the quoting thing - thank you for the mini tutorial Mrs Dot! Good job that vet doesn't work where I am - we (i use the term loosley) have to re-sterilise syringes for one of the vets - or it would be "nurses are like syringes - dead once autoclaved"

I once suggested that we should have a name and shame place on these forums to be able to warn nurses of possible practices not to walk into without some trepidation but how on earth would we keep it confidential.
Vets were in their 30s and 40s unfortunately - some just out of vet school and it is quite evident that no training is given in vet school to people or management skills,

You can also partially delete this quote if you don't want to include all of it in your post!

QVN's/ RVN's are in short supply and the supply will get shorter if the NVQ training isn't changed soon... I can understand you not saying anything at the time... the situation is totally different if you are a student.... whereas when you are a qualified, you are able to stand up for our profession more readily... I do anyway! Rightly or wrongly..................

Re: vet surgeon act review

i don't know how to do that copy and pastething that shows i am replying to your comments but:

Vets were in their 30s and 40s unfortunately - some just out of vet school and it is quite evident that no training is given in vet school to people or management skills,

I was a student at the time and needed my place so I am afraid I sat and stewed - needless to say i moved on as soon as i could

Being as we are two a penny its funny how we can't get a locum for love nor pennies at the moment - I hope she has the same problems should she need a locum!

Re: vet surgeon act review

[quote user="Fluffy"]I too in a staff meeting have heard - "nurses are two a penny, if you don't like what we are telling you to do then leave - there are plenty more out there" - i just love motivation

Nothing like raising the morale amongst staff Would love the see the response that vet gets to his/her job adverts in the current time, seeing as we're two a penny and all...

i haven't read the review yet (and giving what you have said I am not sure if i want to) but in my mind until our profession is recognised as a profession we will never be seen as anything other than 'just nurses' or so very accurately put - the bottom end of the toilet. After all, we only stroke animals for a living so why should we matter.......(rant over)

I too in a staff meeting have heard - "nurses are two a penny, if you don't like what we are telling you to do then leave - there are plenty more out there" - i just love motivation

Incredible!!!!! Such a way with words!!! Why do vets get such a kick out of putting people down like that?!.... were they what I call old-school vets eg in their 50's/60's?

I'm hoping that as these vets leave the profession( I won't say die out!!) then the newer generation of vets, with a more professional attitude, and generally more respect for us and people (and who don't have the 'we are superior', closed-shop attitude) than we will be seen as professionals by them and the RCVS! Until then there will always be this kind of negative, powerbased, arrogant, controlling management!

Re: vet surgeon act review

Ye gods Fluffy, nothing like motivating your staff and trying to create a peaceful and happy working environment is there?
