I will keep searching info! Ive been on the computer and scribbling in my notebook since 6pm tonight and im starting to fall to sleep now, lol!

One more question guys - Ive read in various places and posts that its NON TP practices that take on animal nursing assistants, not training practices. Why is this? Can i not do ANA/VCA course at a TP?

Re: ANA Results

Lissy its a long time since I've been invloved in nursing training and when I undertook training was before the ANA and VCA qualifiactions were realeased, but am sure there are others on here that can advise you on that side of theings.

I believe that you dont have to be employed/volunteer at a training practice, althou there are probably certain things for them to offer to cover the syllabus

Re: ANA Results

I woulnt have got the college place to do the ANA if I didnt have a work placement, but I dont know if that rule differs from Scotland/England etc. The college said they would have tried to get me a work placement, but it could have been anywhere really, so Ithought it best to sort thatend out first x

Re: ANA Results

Thanks for that Maisy.

That makes sense the way you went about applying. I was just thinking i could prob apply to some places where i can do some part time voluntary ( but hey if i get paid thats a plus!) which would enable me to get some experience and so im able to apply to a college and do my ANA or vet care assis one, and then once ive done that i can apply to other practices for trainee VN if the one im currently at are not a TP.

Nick - thanks for that link. Ive just been looking at it and looks good, I would happily fund that myself (anything really just to get a foot in!) but the problem is getting a place at a practice! Do they have to be a practice that do take on people as ANA in general , or do you think sometimes they will just agree to it on the off chance? (Hope that makes sense!) I ask because i know the vets where i take my lot do not have such a thing as assistants, voluntary or otherwise! I wonder if most vets have their set structure of what roles they employ.

The above course that you provided the link to states that you will have a mentor at the practice you work/volunteer in , but if you get a place at a vets helping out on a volunteer basis i doubt they would want the hassle (from their point of view) of helping you with the college side of things if they need to assess you and fill forms out etc etc?

Re: ANA Results

All I did was apply for advertised SVN positions, or apply randomly, and then tell them I would need to do the ANA course first. I never actually found this to be a problem and didn't have any negative experiences with employers for needing to do this first. When I got the job at the practice I trained at, I did say I'd pay for the ANA first but the practice paid for me to do it distance learning anyway.

Some of the larger practices employ assistants whose role is an ANA, but as I wanted to do the NVQ regardless, I just applied for SVN jobs.

Hope this helps.

Re: ANA Results

http://www.caw.ac.uk/vn/vnncvca.htm

Re: ANA Results

Thank you for the info.

so, MAISY - did you apply to work as a vets as a trainee ANA and just say you would pay yourself? or did you just do some voluntary work and then ask if you could do your ANA? The reason i ask is because ive not got a clue what to do for the best myself yet! as i have not got the required GCSEs i dont know if to try and do these first and then apply to places as a trainee VN or to send my CV to some places asking for a ANA position and i would fund that myself.

Ive read on some college websites that you can do Vet care assistant course aswell that is equal to the ANA but you can be doing voluntary work OR paid for this and it counts as entry to trainee VN , However its not listed on the RCVS website.

Re: ANA Results

If you need to do the ANA course first you don't need to apply at a practice specifically for an ANA position. I did this course first and still sent out my CV applying for SVN positions and found this didn't really hinder my chances. A lot of practices will get you to work 6m-1yr before enrolling on the NVQ so I offered to pay to do the ANA during this year.

Re: ANA Results

woohoo congrats

Secondly, i was just wondered how you all went about getting on a ANA course? did the vets you applied at offer this scheme or did you apply with a college and pay of your own back and beg vet practices for a position?

I would imagene its quite hard to get accepted by a vets to do this? I know the vets where i take my pets for instance do not have any animal nursing assistants. Ive also been looking at college websites and noticed some offer ANA courses where you have to be employed min of 3 days a wk at a practice and also Vet nursing assistant course which says you can do paid OR voluntary work min 2 days a week, and either of these courses would count as entry to apply for a trainee VN.

Re: ANA Results

Well Done on passing and Good Luck with NVQ

Re: ANA Results

Hi,
