You rarely see cottage style gardens any more - an absolute haven for bees, bugs and butterflys. My garden (when I get one) is going to be an array of flowers, foliage and colour I have got details on making bee, bug and bat houses too and thats what all my family are going to get for birthday and christmas presents. Who needs a Nintendo DS anyway!!

I have lots of lavender in my garden which is always full of bees!! 2 of my vets also have started bee keeping courses and have lots of bee hives!! Trying to do our bit for the poor bees!!

buddlias and honeysuckle as already mentioned are well liked by bees also mallows (lavatera) are very popular anything yellow or orange is good, thinking French Marigolds. Foxgloves, hollyhocks, red hot pokers - and again as already mentioned lots of the herbs and dont have everything too tidy. There are some burrowing bees under the pyracantha at the bungalow - so long as they dont get into the wall cavity and fill it with honey as they have done in the past I am happy to leave them where they are - but they have been warned!

I'm going to find some websites for you but the ones I have in my garden that they love are lavender, lavender and more lavender, borage, jasmine- I have a red one that is tall and very bushlike that flowers in May that attracts no end of them, they love my raspberry flowers, foxgloves, aquilegia's, sea holly, thistles, sunflowers, honeysuckles, ivy- they flower without you realising in Autumn, rosemary, verbena- all insect life seems to love this- butterflies, bees, moths etc, clematis, clover, buddleia. The trick is to not make your garden too tidy, don't weed too much and also make sure that the flowers you have are not double/triple petalled as the bees can't get to the pollen

Sorry... couldn't find many with pictures, but plant as many as you can... it can take a few years to build up numbers but try not to use any chemicals and just accept that they prefer your grass not perfect, weeds among the flowers, fruit and veg and places to breed in. I've had a solitary bee house up for about 5 years and each year a few more holes get filled up- they return each year apparently... I have 12 hoiles filled this year and only 7 last year- very proud!

Thanks - The drug they are worried about is a variation of whats in Advantage... if anyone uses any chemicals to kill vine weevil in pots, then that is the one

- glad somebody is thinking about the bees. I would like to have a few hives again once I am back in the village - probably wont be allowed them in the church yard again but lots of other safe places I could put them. Used to get some fantastic honey off mine but not so good when I moved them. The hives I didnt sell I lost to varoa - bees are having a really rough time of it
