I work in a branch surgery as sole nurse and rest was the classic no support from the main hospital! We had a fully booked morning consults 8.30-11, then from that 4 inpatients/procedures... By 1pm we were on our final procedure which

Re: Branch surgery/sole charge nurses...

Not surprised you're shattered. This is NOT on!! You are being taken advantage of and it clearly breaches the working time laws. To be ranting about it you obviously don't get anything in return. You wouldn't mind doing shitty shifts if you were appreciated right?! I wouldn't work what you're doing and I'm not even qualified yet! Yes this job does take up a lot of your life but you are entitled to rest and sleep. Sounds like a horrible place u work! :/ xx

Re: Branch surgery/sole charge nurses...

Anything that needs to saty in overnight gets sent to our main surgery, as there is a nurse their all night, so neither of our branches keep inpatients, and we always send over a nurse to the branches to cover lunches and breaks, even though at times it leaves us short staffed......... which incidentally happened today.

Re: Branch surgery/sole charge nurses...

You need to point out to the VS concerned that any problems you had with the pet would be down to him to explain to the client.

I have been sole nurse in a small one + half vet practice for the last three years. When I arrived I was expected to do anaes., answer phone and door when the recepionist went home at one. I did this for the first few months and eventully I had to voice my fears of how dangerous this was and I did not want to continue working that way. To my suprise the vet didnt think it had been a problem in the past (They had been quieter then) and agreed to employ another receptionist to cover the afternoons!

The moral of that story is ask- and complain! You never know!

Re: Branch surgery/sole charge nurses...

Not sure where to start but this is outrageous. working for an org that has more than one site is always tricky as 1 site always perceives they are busier/have it harder etc than the other but this is where team work is absolutely essential. I really feel for you as i have been in similar (but not nearly as bad) situtions where you feel, alone, unappreciated, and shat upon from a great height. At the moment it would seem that asking politely is getting you nowhere and only producing negative and unhelpful responses. as a start you should know that by law you are entitled to an 8 hour break between the end of one shift and the start of another - that includes your 6am checks. i would suggest that you inform (note inform and not ask) your head murse/ prac mgr that you will at least require cover for an early finish today in lieu of the hours you worked through the night - after all a tired nurse is not necessarily a safe nurse. I am sure the client whose animal it was would be appaled that this could happen when they are paying the bill for full professional services - i am afraid that i would be tempted to vote with my feet if things didn't improveor it wont just be you that suffers....good luck
