If hub shops he just slings in what we need never really looks at cost just do we need it yes/no tick the bok.

When l shop l do the following in any order:
1) Go by cost - can l afford it l will not buy all the expensive stuff that is a rip off.
2)Try and decipher wording so that l can see how it was kept not easy.
3)Look at where it came from je Danish pork is often bad conditions so look for the british tractor for that (again no guarantee) but then go by 1 and 2
4) Very occasional fish as hub likes fish l look for sustainable stocks and how it was caught.
5) Look at the item to see it looks good and is what l want or does it appear to be "all air and no substance"
6) Eggs barn or free range

But at the end of the day it is a throw in the air luck about what l have bought. So long as l do the best l can within my pocket and concience l figure that is a damm sight more than many do.

Re: Veg ?

The best doesnt always mean the most expensive, but surely you should and would want to know exactly where your meat is comming from and the way in which that animal is kept?
I dont eat eggs or cheese to often but am not vegan so i dont a problem, being a vegan is a lil bit too hard!! I do cook for my bf and he knows my opinion on buying the best meats which we try to do but hes eating it not me.

You should only be eating organic fruit and veg as other wise there is
so much environmental damage done mass producing fruit and veg and
those that eat cheese and eggs are you not eating only organically
produced food.
Although regards organic (live) food there is controversy over health
care and lack of it to avoid problems with organic status.

I can not afford expensive meat (said how l feel about fish
although hub likes fish) l would have steak and roast beef every night
but not a chance so those are very ocassional treats although nice
steak in uk is almost impossible to get. It is not hung just killed and
eaten.
We get a range of food but things like cheap burgers are a waste of
time. Have to say lately has been a fair amount of pre prepared foods
although that is unusual mostly it is all fresh with hub cooking it.

(edited cause l thought Lou. asked but on reread saw several had said similar)

Re: Veg ?

Fish cakes are ok it is solid blocks of fish. Youngs do some pollock in batter (or breadcrumbs) they are not to bad again not strong. The minuite l get the strong taste forget it. That is why l am wary about having fish even from fish shops since cod has been harder to get.
Oh and fishbones garrr no l am not big on sardines cause of bones l have to bone them.

If l get a grape or a section of orange with a pip in thats it l can not eat that bit of fruit in the case of orange the entire amount left. Dont mind solid seed fruit ie peach or leechies something like that it is the "hidden" seeds l find make me feel ill.

By the way pears and salt n vinegar crisps are very nice
Another is a bowl of malt vinegar with salt and pepper in and dip your fruit (any fruit) into that, piece by piece. You can use sweet vinegars but l find malt is best.

cheese rules, this i cannot give up,

Mmmm cheese butty, cheese toasty, chease on pasta, cheese pizza, crackers and cheese, not obsessed at all then

i cant buy the stuff anymore, a block of cheese last me 3 days tops so so bad!! mmm cheesssy pasta so cheap and easy to make and tastes so great!

Looking at he other posts here, what i hate is when people question why i am vegetarian and mock it. When I first met my other half family thats what they asked bit of a mood killer to explain it . Quite simple I take the view that meet is murder not a onversation started by anymeans lol!

I do agree people have to look at where there meet is comming from and decide then if they can actually eat it. kill it cook it eat it was good at that and i think it put a few ppl of meat. The other thing people who are eating meat and fish should consider is there diet, I mean if you can't buy the best meat out there then why do you want to eat it? thats something that always confuses me. Personally having been on viva and peta and seen the way some animals are kept and treated just breaks my heart but thats me!

The other thing thats bug me is the sentence "I am a vegetarian but i eat fish/chicken" grrrr annoys the hell out of me lol

anyways rant over! :D

Re: Veg ?

I am not a fish eater the taste is generally to strong for me. It may however increase the amount of ie chicken imported from Asia if the consumer sticks with the cheap meat attitude - but with education and time maybe it would change?

One thing that really irks me is people who say 'I have no choice I have to buy cheap burgers/ chicken/ pies (strike out whichever non applicable) because I am on benefits /low income ' Wrong - it might mean you have to experiment with cheaper cuts and cook them a bit longer, or not eat so much meat or in most cases actually learn to cook and not be dependant on takeaways but it is possible to live very well on a low income. ( nothing wrong with offal, - admittedly I am not a fan of tripe or chitterlings, neck of lamb makes a fantastic stew, saddle of rabbit in an ale and mustard gravy is also very very nice, brisket done in the slow cooker absolutely melts in the mouth - will stop now I am feeling hungry )

Hardly anybody seems to eat fish anymore unless it comes from the chippy - the argument that some species are low in numbers is not an excuse - there are many types of fish we just need to be a bit more adventurous.- it doesnt always have to be haddock or cod, and a little bit of fish can go a long way. What about a bit of monk or hokie, have to admit I am not keen on pollock or salmon, trout is a good buy, kippers are good Forget fishfingers (I worked in a factory making them and would be very careful about which ones I will eat) get yourself a bag of say cod cheeks and make some fishcakes or a fish pie - I promise it will be a lot tastier than anything you get out of a packet and a lot cheaper.

- think I am turning into Jamie Oliver now

I am very happy for people to pursue whatever course of dietary belief they decide upon although I have to say I prefer it when people have a least given whatever they choose some thought. ..what I mean is I can't stand meat eater who say they could never be veggie but get squeamish about eating things like rabbit for example or who could never face up to the processes involved in where meat comes from..it bugs me as I think people who think meat arrives in neatly cellophane should be made to face the meat chain and shoot, skin and eat something and then make their minds up ...if you can't kill and prepare it you should lose the right to eat it . What I would love to see is a move back to slower and more careful methods of farming..meat prices would go up so everyone would have to eat less but what they did eat would taste better, have better welfare standards and more money would go direct to farmers. It's never likely to happen on a large scale as as a race we are a greedy conveinence based bunch

What does surprise me is the number of people who say they are veggies and vegans and hate veg all they eat seems to be cheese and/or baked beans. I pretty much like most veg. Except not to keen on green beans and hate baked beans.

I would have liked to have tried tofu just to have tried it but going by my reactions on drinking soya milk that would not be a good idea. Soya dilute as it is in other food is fine but l was violently ill drinking soya milk both times at different times and as tofu is pure soya no experimenting for me.

Re: Veg ?

I know a few veggies in this industry. My partner thought I was a veggie due to the job I do and was very shocked when I pointed out that I wasn't.

I think a lot of people assume because we work with animals we would be all veggies!

Re: Veg ?

I have been veggie for 15 years and never looked back.

Re: Veg ?

quorn is pretty good but i do prefer the vegie stuff like proper vegtable lasange (?) then meat free lasange. been a veggie for 13 years

Re: Veg ?

Have tried Quorn and as a meat eater i thought it was pretty good, never tried tofu or that type of thing.

Re: Veg ?

quorn is still available - though they do seem to have reduced the range quite a bit - and yes I still eat it
