I'd like to pick your brains if that's ok
We had an RSPCA hedgie handed in the other day with a severely mangled hind leg so vet decided to amputate, she was doing great and is now recovering in our receptionists large garden. Our receptionist

Re: Hedgehogs

Hoggies!!! Ok... Three-legged should not be released, if the have a problem with another leg - they are stuffed, would not be fair to them. Our perms with three legs are kept in large 'garden' enclousures in the visitors centre. they are checked daily, with a full health check once a week. they do fine in this environment.

Is it a front or hind leg missing? Fronts tend to need a closer eye on them as they can damage the skin there the leg was. Hind legs do just fine.

Hibernation wise, they don't have true hibernation period, if the temp rises, they wake up, if it lowers again, they go back to sleep. So food should be available just in case. Make sure they have plenty to nest with. Weigh around mid October time, if less than 600 grams, they are in danger of not surviving winter through hibernation, and should be brought in over wionter. 600g+ will carry them right through.

Re: Hedgehogs

a very good source of info from uk rescuers is hedgehog forums

Re: Hedgehogs

[quote user="MissVetNurse"]

Think this relates to another thread about keeping wild animals captive. Poor hedgies instincts would be to roam/forage & mate - having 3 legs would not stop it wanting to carry out those basic things. So maybe, if it can't be released in a large enough area to satisfy those needs........dare I say it?

Re: Hedgehogs

You need to speak to Lil TLC!
