We had a shar-pei in yesterday which was a referral from private practice

He had horrific wounds to his neck as a result of a fight with another shar-pei!! He was absolutely lovely towards his owner and wagging his tail but it was almost impossible to sedate him later as he was just daring us to come near him. After 3 of us tried to restrain him, we eventually got a muzzle on and sedated him.

I went to get him out of his kennel to discharge him, and he dared me to go near with his looks and his snarling, once he saw his owner, he became the angel dog again!!

He had surgery to his wounds with a penrose drain and stitches. Owner phoned approx 1 hour after he had gone home to say he had pulled drain out (no buster collar as all neck wounds) then phoned again tonight to say he had somehow magically managed to get stitches out????? of his neck??? anyway, I have the pleasure of dealing with him again first thing in the morning!

well, an update on Harvey - our Shar Pei!

He came back in this morning having totally torn apart his wounds from yesterday. We sedated him while the owner was there without any problems thankfully.

He was actually more placid today, I got the feeling that he knew we were trying to help him. There were of course a few snarls and growls along the way but I have kind of got to like him in a weird sort of way.

I wonder sometimes is it just because they get so nervous when they are out of their comfort zone?

Anyway, he completely wrecked his wound through scratching it to the point where it is impossible to correct it surgically. The vet in charge decided to treat it as an open wound with wet to dry for the next while until we see how it is progressing.

Of course, the only problem with this is that we will have to see and deal with him every single day for the forseeable!#

Hopefully he will mellow with time?

In the middle of a very hectic day at work a lady rings us in tears. Her shar pei has attacked her other shar pei and then turned on her so she's locked it in the garden so can we please come and get rid of her. Urmm no!

Managed to get her to bring the dog in (in a cage) so we sedated her and then put her to sleep. We got the other dog in to check out his wounds and he had teeth marks all him so we had him in to clip and clean up. The owner kept saying how he was a lovely dog but had trouble with his sight. Urmm yeah how about because he has eye lashes rubbing against them causes loads of pain!! I really don't know why people get these mutant dogs!

We do have a couple of nervous ones but I have never seen a really nasty one.. yet!!

Re: Shar peis!

I had one for 5 . 5 yrs best dog ever with people he knew they are very good in the home, sadly I lost him to shar pei fever syndrome/renal failure 7 weeks ago, best companion i have ever had.

Re: Shar peis!

It's a pity you can't see their eyes though!!!

Re: Shar peis!

One of nurses i work with was admitting shar pei and I heard a scream! The owner had assured her it was friendly and didn't mind injections but on giving pre-med it tried to bite her hand off. Her hand was VERY badly inflammed and bruised. O bought her some chocs to apologise!

It's all in the eyes, as much as O trusts dog themselves I don't trust staring eyes! Most Shar Peis have staring mistrustful eyes and I never pre-med them with the owner. Same with rotties except a very obese rotty we get in who thinks that injections are fabulous!! (she has sparkling darting eyes not staring focussed eyes!)

Re: Shar peis!

Super mingin!

Can't stand the little sods. We had one in after an RTA a while ago. Needed muzzling and it still tried to have a go! I thought it was due to it being in pain after it's RTA, but obviously not!!!

Heard some right horror stories about them. Why do people buy them?!

Re: Shar peis!

Ewww - Ming-a-ling!!!
