I was just wondering what everyone's views of the DAP and Feliway diffusers are? do you think they work?

Feliway needs to be left on in order to build up in the environment, it cant just be "turned on" for 10mins, you need to leave it on x

Re: Feliway and DAP...do they work?

I have a rescue lurcher, Daisy, she is a very nervous and highly strung little girl. I recently attended a talk by Lucy Brett from Ceva, here in Templepatrick. Firstly, she gave a fantastic talk and afterwards I was convinved by the DAP collar.

I have been using it religiously every 4 weeks since (you renew it every 4 weeks) and she is such a different, happy, chilled out dog, it is unbelieveable - I will never be without a DAP collar so long as I have Daisy and incidentally, I recommended it not so long ago to a collie who couldnt even sit down, she was so nervous - that collie has now got so far as she will go to her owner for attention, wag her tail, appear a happy dog, whereas before she was frightened of absolutely everything.

In the case of the collie, she is also undergoing behavioural therapy but the DAP collar has made a tremendous change in her life.

Re: Feliway and DAP...do they work?

my cat suffers from flutd and i swear by it. he used to get worked up and worried when we went to work or even went out this calmed him right down. Even got the spray for the vist to the vets because he really doesnt like going but feliway works everytime for us and so far hes not blocked up in nearly a year so fingers crossed it stays tht way :D

A rep from the makers of DAP and Feliway said they are best used before the animal is wound up - if a dog with separation anxiety has got himself into a state then probably no amount of DAP will calm him down. However if you use it before they get worked up it can work really well.

She also explained that Felifriend is best used in cats you've never 'met' before... something to do with the pheremone used being the same as the one cats recognise as being used when a person/animal is considered 'friendly'. If a cat has perceived you as a threat in the past, then having conflicting pheremones telling them otherwise can be very confusing for them and can in fact make them even more stressed!

Feliway on the other hand is based on the pheremone a cat recognises when a place is considered safe, so can be good for using in kennel and on consult tables.

the thing I picked up in the original post is.....whenever we switch it on......it should be on 24 7 as it has an accumulative effect in the environment so is not meant for a quick fix....if this is needed the spray should be used

Re: Feliway and DAP...do they work?

We use Feilway in our cat kennels but not the diffuser, we spray the kennels a minimum of 15 mintes before cats are going, but the spray will last for 24 hours so the effect will last even if the kennel isn't used straight away.

Wouldn't use the diffuser if there is a lot of traffic or movement in the room, with doors opening & shutting, as it will just get "blown away".

They both definitely work - its usely a compliance issue than it not working!

Same with the DAP, use a bandana & spray - although this only lasts for 45 minutes or stick a collar on them!

I have a very scatty bengal who came to me untouched at 13 weeks, I used feliway diffuser's in the flat and then when I moved (managed to move 3 times in the last year since getting her) and she and the other 2 settled within days and are very happy. I have used the spray when she started spraying and urinating in the new flat (she came into season and even once spayed continued) this has in fact (touching a large piece of wood) appeared to have cured this too! I used a DAP diffuser my very nervous collie when I got her and it worked wonders and I now have a DAP plugged in all the time to keep my terrier puppy happy. I notice when it runs out because she shreds her toys!

there are some good articles out at the moment (believe the vetrecord had one in the other week) which discuss the use of the DAP collar in puppies, it is meant to be great to help with socialising issues etc. if you speak to Kerry Simpson or Danielle Gunn-Moore at the R(D)SVS they will tell you how the kennels, consult rooms and any rooma cat is in concious (waiting roomincluded) have diffusers in them. They spray their hands with Felifriend before consults and use travel spray on all bedding and carriers. They swear bu the stuff. We use a feliway diffuser at work and I would say it has made a difference, we have much happier in-patients!

Re: Feliway and DAP...do they work?

something I used to do which I felt helped - but couldnt prove it. when you have cleaned your baskets/ kennels out last thing, let them dry and then give a quick squirt of feliway so they are ready for the morning . Also if we had nervy cats in for consults that had soiled their baskets - used to clean out the basket and dry it and then spray feliway on the underside of the fresh newspaper (so the cat couldnt smell the carrier in the feliway spray) which I feel helped quite a bit. - this method was 'road tested' with my own beasties.
