I used to live in the big white house at the base of the old roman iron mines at Nettleton, so may have an idea of what you experienced - I have a photo somewhere of one of the boulders that was blown apart by a lightning strike - was quite spectacular

A kopje is a hill usually full of boulders. I lived right next door to the Hillside Dams http://www.hillsidedams.com/history.html and it is full of small kopjes. Page 5 in the gallery with the 2 small buildings (toilets) we lived about 50yards behind them. We didn't know till they started to go up about them. My folks were furious but couldn't stop the buildings as it turns out they were never used. Just behind is a raise of ground that is a kopje our house ran part way up it's base.

Here is some photos of other kopjes, the first is a famous one in matopas known as mother and child the rest are from the matopas but give good shots of how they look. Usually the boulders are multicoloured from the minerals in them also from lichens.:

Sorry Sal until you have been through an African thunder and lightening storm especially where you are sourrounded by kopjes full of iron you haven't seen a thunder and lightening storm.

Thunder storms are the best! I remember when I was little my dad used to sit me and my sister on the front door step to watch them! Have loved them ever since!

Haha, i tried to sit out in them in Greece a couple of years ago but my dad made me come inside, and made me stay away from the window, spoil sport! The rain carried on in the morning the next day, we were on a steep hill so could see the rain pouring down the road like a river! It was very funny watching people walking along trying to stay dry under towels!!!!

We were in Barcelona a couple of years ago and we got fantastic storms - sat out on the balcony watching it until the manager banged on the door and told us to get in!! Amzing forked & sheet lightening with rain drops the size of grapes!! It was amazing!! Through the day it looked like nothing had happened, except for the torrent of water running down the flood drains into the sea!

I'm hoping we might get some night storms on holiday in Crete (21 sleeps to go woohoo!). I love Greek storms! I seem to remember having a discussion about this before on here or somewhere!

I loooooooovvvvvveeeeee thunder & lightening - it just didn't last long enough here!!! I like even more when we have to give Booglie Xanax cos she goes a bit spacey for 5 minutes with her tongue sticking out!! Very cute!!

thunder at night is just the best ! - I usually get a fantastic nights sleep if I go to bed during a thunder storm

Once last year it was really noisy and lightning flashing all over the place and I really felt like a scaredy cat- felt like the whole house was trembling, probably just me that was trembling!

me too! I HATE it so much more when it's dark. I was cleaning kennels out after day patients left today and the room behind me was dark and it started thundering I had to leave them until it stopped our practice was a doctors in the 1800's so its a bit spooky at times anyway!

It's really sunny here! It's been raining all day and then as soon as I have my driving lesson it got sunny. Really weird but I've been learning since November (rubbish I know!) and it's aaaalways sunny. Don't even know how to turn on the wipers! Even when we had all that snow at the beginning of the year it still managed to be sunny for my lessons.

Same here! torrential rain ALL day, roads on my way home were flooded, the water was over some peoples bonnets!!!

you must be joking! our thunder storm lasted from 1pmish to just before 6 and we are still getting to odd rumble now. Morris is loving it. Jasper is somewhat nonplussed

Hmm hope it doesn't rain for long for you!

I've just heard some thunder Think that's prob my cue to put them away for the night, in case it gets too bad again and i get wet doing it later!
