2 animals I would not mess with are chimps and orangutans. Very dangerous and not to be trusted unfortunately. Scarily intelligent.

When l was at Tenerife zoo had to learn how to use the dart gun and when Paco (owner) went away for a few days l commented that should any animals (chimp, lion etc) escape a dart wouldn't be much use as it took to long and having seen the behaviour of the chimps and orang when they saw the dart gun, they knew what it did and had they been able they would have ripped the holder of any weapon apart. He said no the Guardia had orders to shoot to kill it was all pre-arranged.

There is nothing funny about it. We did not do any training but did discuss what we could do in an escape situation. However most zoo's have a lot of drills for escaped animals for a very good reason.

It is, but no other chimp had managed to escape before.

People may giggle that 30 chimps escaped, but I wouldn't like to take them on. They are a bit unpredictable and will attack if provoked.

It was a keeper I worked with that had to shoot it. He had it cornered in the Tropical House, and it went for him. He didn't really have any choice. He felt really guilty afterwards.

Oh no that's awful Surely if they've managed to escape it's a fault of the enclosure/staff, not the poor chimps?

Not good.

I worked there years ago and a chimp escaped over the barrier and across the canal from chimp island. Luckily before the zoo opened and any public in yet. Said chimp got shot unfortunately as if they have escaped once they can do it again.

I bet someone is in BIG trouble for not shutting the cage door properly. Oops.
