I got called by my brother in law to be last night as his dog had cut its pad when he escaped for the millionth time! Anyway I had a look and he has sliced his main

Re: Treating family and friends animals

I've treated my own pets and friends pets wounds. I just used to use warm salt water to clean it all, always went within a couple of days. Obviously if they had gotten worse i'd have taken them in for anti-biotics, but my cleaning seemed to do the trick :)

Re: Treating family and friends animals

Can you take it to work with you and have a vet look at it and send some abs home if needed and then give them the bill?

Re: Treating family and friends animals

I think if you have advised a vet then there is little else you could do. Can you really leave it without the bandages and not risk harm to the dog? You are doing the best you can, I would make sure it is all on their records at the vets where possible though - making sure you tell them you have advised it is seen by a vet and declined, that should cover your back

I have spent this weekend trying to sort my parent's dogs eye - no need for it to be seen out of hours but I am taking her in Monday - forget my weekend off! Now its my fault her vaccinations are out of date - because I should have a photographic memory for these things!

Re: Treating family and friends animals

by bandaging it your not administering any medication or anything, its basic first aid which we might educate a client to do so i wouldnt worry about that. vets rarely do much for these types of wound anyway do they, other than give antibiotics and bandage til granulation had occured.

Re: Treating family and friends animals

Im sure they would go see a vet if I told them it needed antibiotics.
Im just unsure if its ok for me to 'treat' it with bandage changes without a say so of a vet.
it looks like one of those cuts that will heal ok with bandages and rest etc but will just take its time.

Re: Treating family and friends animals

i think as long as you say it needs to be seen by a vet maybe to get aome antibiotics then you cant do any more than that, if they dont go then thats on their head.
