I've recently done a story on vets and their understanding of nutrition, based on a Hill's survey of recent graduates. I think the findings might interest VNs.....

Personally if I'm speaking to a client about their pet, and they feed them on a general complete food I don't deliberatly push the brand we stock. If the dog/cat is a picky eater, has digestive upsets, poor coat etc then I will give an opinion especially if the animal is on one of the not so good diets.

I'm not going to tell someone to buy xxxxx food just because we stock it, and probably costs double than what they already pay (money is an issue for everybody), but if they specifically ask for advice on the brand then I will go into detail as much as they need.

Re: Nutrition advice

I am going to play devils advocate on this one.

Where I work now, the vets leave it to the nurses to discuss nutrition advice, even diabetic & weight control diets and I think its great we are able to do so.

I also feel that it helps the vet greatly, if he/she can refer the client to a nurse to discuss diet and he/she can get on with the next consultation.

Clients often listen to the nurse, more than the vet and will be happier to ask questions to a nurse. I am confident when giving nutrition advice, I dont often recommend a particular brand, but when a client tells me what they feed their dog, if I think it is of poor nutritional quality, I tell them so.

Hope this helps Emma

Re: Nutrition advice

One vet I know of a certain age would not advise clients to use prescription diets, was particularly weird over weight loss diets, would suggest cabbage and pasta etc. Then of course us V.Ns would have to deal with the questions of how much ruddy cabbage/pasta to feed and what could they do to stop the dog being so gassy!!!!!!!!

It made it very hard to get the cabbage feeders on to a prescription diet because the vet hadnt exactly been enthusiastic about them.
