Hoping someone can give me some advice. My boss is always keen to save pennies wherever he can (fair enough) but I am beginning to get a bit fed up and now worried that we are giving substandard care because of it.
One, we have to throw

Re: advice needed

I had a vet who would 'bung up' a newly opened Bupivicaine (Marcain) 'bottle' after withdrawing enough for an epidural. He would (try) to leave it there for the next epi-sometimes days later, needless to say it would find its way into the bin, so when he would ask for it later I'd just tell him I'd thrown it out. I think the worst one I've heard of is not having disposable gloves at a clinic...and being expected to use 2nd hand surgical gloves...eww!!!

Re: advice needed

I saw one of my bosses putting a syringe of unused propofol back in the bottle! But then I guess the client would want to know why you're using something off licence which could get awkward.

Re: advice needed

Just to answer one of your queries - as far as I am aware, no harm would come from using convenia after the 28days it is licensed for. In fact, I have heard (2nd hand) that it is OK for quite a lot longer - but the various rules mean that the 28day rule was set. Having said all that, it is a risky business using a drug off-license cos if something goes wrong....how do you prove it wasn't due to you???? That is why I personally wouldn't.....

Re: advice needed

i worked at a practice where the vet did that. he disgusted me some of the stuff he used to do. he was also a bin diver. and a penny pincher. it was utterlt foul there and i cannot believe he can still practice. i told him i wasn't happy to do the things he expected to and that if that was the way they wanted to practice that way they could do it themselves as i wasn't prepared to be so disgusting.... if you want some examples i'll type them!! needless to say, i handed my notice in the same week i started...

Re: advice needed

I didn't tell him that it was thrown out but as we are quite a small practice everyone kind of knows what stock there should be and he knew that there should've been some of the drug left when he went to use it today. Tbh, I can't believe he raked through a pharmie bin to retrieve it! I guess there is the RCVS option but it would be obvious that it is me who has said something if any action is taken. I think I will speak to them anyway as I want to know where I would stand as a registered vn if an animal did suffer as a result and I knew about it/ could've prevented it. Would I be liable?

Re: advice needed
We have to throw used vaccine bottles into normal waste rather than a parmie bin. Not a massive problem but still...
This is a problem as it is a breach of enviromental health. You should be aware also that enviromental health have been visiting practices up and down the country to ensure the rules are being followed. They will ask to see all paperwork and will ask alot of questions and tour your practice to look at what you are doing.
I threw out about 2ml remaining in the bottle 2 days ago as it was the 28 days up.
This is an issue in a great many veterinary practices and there is great debate about whether it is ok to use after the 28 day cut off. If he is still adament about doing this then dont tell him when you throw it away.

Thanks
