I have just started working in a practice as a SVN and I have countless piercings and tattoos and regularly dye my hair. I have to take out my lip ring but all my other piercings are fine as long as they are studs, and I wear flesh colored tunnels in my stretched ears. It is more about H&S than anything else, they should accept you for who you are! :-)

I agree with Julie.

It really does depend on the rpactice. One practice I have worked at there was a nurse with dreadlocks and one with pink hair and piercings and tattoos. I have tattoos on my wrist, only small stars and i don't really notice or think about them, i'm aware that if my boss wanted me to cover them i would have to, otherwise I keep them out. I personally don't wear alot of jewlery so piercings have never been a problem.

I think remember that you will be working for someone and representing their business so it will always need to go past them first, most bosses are reasonable as long as you talk to them first about it. :)

It depends on the practice. I have full arms of tattoos as well as a large chest piece that is visible over my scrub top, I wear a long sleeved top under my scrub top but I really only pull the sleeves down when I'm actually in the consult room with a client, the rest of the time I have my sleeves pulled up. My hair has been shaved, bright red, purple and blue while I've worked at my current practice and no one has ever said anything but when I asked if I could go 2 different colours my boss said no. And I'm fine with that, there's a reason I asked. I have a few facial piercing, 2 of which I remove and my septum I hide - nothing has ever been said about my ears so I've never done anything about them.

As much as I get that people will (and do) judge me on my looks, I really don't care about them. I'm not a people person so I really don't care about what others think but when it comes to my job, I will listen to my bosses as it's their business and they're my bosses. But what I've found is that most clients are fine with them, in fact the clients that are interested in tattoos and piercings themselves always ask about them and are generally interested.

But it will all come down to the practice you work at. They might not like staff having tattoos but they are easy enough to hide, as are piercings.

Your tattoos don't define who you are - you define who you are. :) If you want them, fine, but don't let them rule how you live your life.

I am an aspiring vet nurse starting a vet care assistant placement and course very soon and I wonder how accepting the industry is on tattoos?? i have one on the underside on my bicep and I want to finish my half sleeve off, would I be allowed to have more tattoos as long as I can cover them or? Really need some further opinions and suggestions as it's bugging me a lot, I don't want to have to stop being who I am!

They're clear plastic piercing jewellery... they keep the piercings open whilst being a lot less visible.

When l was growing up in Rhodesia they brought out hair colouring in a can, loads of bright colours. You could spray it on and then wash it out when done. As we did not have the weather over here although did have a wet season the rain was not really a problem.

The spray came out at the Bulawayo trade fair and a friend's dad was working there so we had free passes every day. She and l had multicoloured hair all the trade fair as we were on the stand trying new colours out every day. Never bought it as no need.

Yeah, I had them pierced with retainers. I did the same with my nose, they heal up just as nicely :) Although most places don't do it, my friend does all my piercings so she uses retainers as a favour.

emmRAR were you able to put retainers in your lip piercings right away - I've been dying to get mine done but I think my boss would have some kind of embolism if I did???

I thought this topic would be a good one for my first post :)

I have 36 piercings, most of which are hidden for work. My boss isn't too fussed about my ear piercings as I tone them down quite a bit, I wear retainers in some of my facial piercings, but that's only until they're old enough to stay open by themselves. I did get in a bit of trouble for having lip piercings done though... even though I had clear retainers in, I looked like I'd been punched in the mouth and they were quite obvious at first!

I've always liked dying my hair bright colours, no one complained in my last job and my hairdresser really wants to dye some of my hair bright red... but I think it's best to ask my boss's permission and do what I'm told!

I don't really like having to tone down my appearence as it's part of who I am, but then again this is the job I've always wanted so it takes priority.

My boyfriend is a skinhead with tatoos and piercings... also called Dave, haha! but he get followed round shops by security guards. really gets on is nerves, he gets told ' well what do you expect looking like that?' small minded, hes is the lovleist bloke ever .
