Last night her face swelled up and she could not open her eyes. Following 4hrs through the night of cold compresses, the swelling decreased slightly. This morning after speaking to the doctor

Re: HPV vaccine

This thread is from 2009

Re: HPV vaccine

I have HPV and have had to have pre cancerous cells removed from my cervix several times, the first when i was just 22. If the law about smears was as it is now and only have smears after the age of 25 i would probably either be dead or have advanced cervical cancer. I now have to have a smear every 6 months.

I wish there was a vaccine available when i was a child. I would rather have a swollen face than cervical cancer.

Vaccines are there for a reason and while they might have side effects they are few and far between, my children will recieve all vaccines available.

Your daughters face will go down and im sure you'd rather she was protected than end up with cancer.

I would try and seek a second opinion.

I also suffered a reaction to a cleaner when I was 17 and my face swelled up. I was given steroids at high dose reducing over 20 days.

Re: HPV vaccine

I'm really sorry to hear about this awful experience. I'm not a parent, but from knowing many (very sensible) partents, they tend to feel guilty about anything that happens to their children, so don't beat yourself up that you have put her though this.

But do we, as vets and nurses not already know, from our "favourite" pet owners, that some of these sites on the internet give misleading, biased and sometimes misinformed advice?

Do we know what percentage of those given the vaccine have minor reactions, let alone these severe reactions? Compare that the the percentage of women who develop cervical cancer-especially at a scarily young age. Probably doesn't compare.

I hope to think when I have to make that choice, I will be able to think logically?!? and make the right decision for my childs health. Which I think you definitely did, Eghamcb!

[/quote] I have been making enquires and it seems there has been many girls with side effects. One in particular is a 12yr old who had swellings and pain with her 1st jab. She was given the second inj (yourequire three)- that evening she lost the use of her legs and currently is in a wheelchair. Cause unknown!

Did you not get all the info when your got your daughters appt?
I gave both my kids the MMR, and again no major side effects, apart from a little unwell afterwards and swollen face. I am sorry to hear about your daughter and I hope she feels better soon.

Can I say that prevention is better than cure, as I am sure you already know, and you were only doing the right thing by your daughter by letting her have the vaccine. Too many lives............. and a lot of them young lives are lost through this, so please dont let this put you off, better a reaction to the vaccine than ....well we all know what might be!
