Are you busy enough? I'm not being challenged and spending too much time trying to fill in time between consults.
Also, if it comes to it, how would anyone go about looking for a role as

RE: Is anyone else solely or mainly a consulting nurse?

Gina, does your practice management system allow you to search notes? We regularly run reports looking for the word overweight or obese or OA etc and then email them inviting them to clinic based on the vets notes.

RE: Is anyone else solely or mainly a consulting nurse?

I really enjoy consults, theres so much you can do. I would talk to your reception team and get them to book in anything you can do - give them a list for ideas maybe? You can also do the AVN Practice Nurse qualification and move into medical clinics?

RE: Is anyone else solely or mainly a consulting nurse?

I have been a consulting nurse for 25 years as I had to give up working in theatre and the more physical side of nursing due to back problems. I was lucky in having a boss who fully supported me in developing a more structured nurse clinic program which over the years as been expanded to include many specialties. We currently run clinics that include all the normal things such as post op checks , anal glands etc but also other more specific areas like renal, diabetes,, puppy advice, mobility clinics, pre neutering, desensitisation, seniors, juniors. The list could go on as there are so many areas that nurses can be skilled in developing a rapport with clients in that specialised topic.

An interest and be qualified in which clinic you want to run and above all enjoy the interaction between yourself and the client and the job satisfaction you receive when you see the pet improving is so rewarding

RE: Is anyone else solely or mainly a consulting nurse?

Thanks Louise, my issue is waiting for my senior vets to have time to discussing my plans to implement new clinics, and getting other vets to refer eg OA dogs to me so that I can have the patients to run the more interesting clinics that have been launched.

RE: Is anyone else solely or mainly a consulting nurse?

Declide what clinics you want to impliment such as post neutering weight clinics, senior clinics for arthritis checks etc once diagnosed by VS, dental checks and post dental cleaning advise, weight clinics, diabetes clinics, the potential is huge but pick a area you have interest in first (mine was nutrition) and build from there, most companies will provide support materials to help you engage with clients and managment would rather see you busy and brining in income to the surgery.

RE: Is anyone else solely or mainly a consulting nurse?

I really don't enjoy nurse clinics, but one of the girls loves them. I have been at practices where there has been a purely consulting nurse, mainly part time. I enjoy surgery and patient care.

it did make it awkward as if we were short staffed they wren every reluctant to help out in anaesthesia.

RE: Is anyone else solely or mainly a consulting nurse?

I love consulting and generally kept busy.My day obviously varies but being part of IVC we offer 6 month healthy pet checks in the Pet |Health Club so this can take up alot of my consulting time.We do nail clips, anal glands, pre kitten and Puppy vacc clinics, post op check, weigh flea and worm, librela etc.We are trying to introduce pre euthanasia clinics as i think it would be lovely to offer these clients more time and support, this would also show for me that we really do care and not everything is about bringing money in to the surgery.I have also taken over doing insurance so this is how i tend to fill in time between consults or help the other nurses where needed.

I have one work day in the week which is switched between prep/kennels and theatre as we only have 1 rvn and 1 student on Saturdays and bank holidays so i need to be able to still feel confident in theatre.

We are usually fully booked most days for nurse aps. Things they do are 2nd vacs, librela etc, pocs, nail clips, eags, weigh worm and flea, desensitisation clinics, blood tests and anything else the vet requests them to do.

I've seen a few jobs over the years advertised as consult only nurse but tbh it's not something I've looked into as I far prefer anaesthesia and inpatient care
