For sure, a lot of clients are more comfortable talking to us anyway! I get a lot of questions from my clients about stuff the vet has explained, they feel we are more approachable and are often a bit worried about asking a ‘stupid’ question of the vets

Inge Breatnach - that got me thinking ... it's not just food, it's all sorts of daft advice that comes from all sorts of different people. I think a film explaining why you should talk to your vet nurse for advice would be a great subject. Also, I think the story is that pet owners should always talk first to their RVN (as opposed to vet), because vets are busy, there's a perception that they will cost lots of money etc. If needed, you'll put them on to the vet.

Also regarding food choices, that people in pet shops aren’t actually more knowledgable than us. Actually when it comes to it that we are bound by professional standards, which means food influencers can absolutely make false claims with no recourse, which is why they can claim to cure skin disease/cancer etc with foods

Jo Hobbs THANK YOU, the more people that do, the more we might hope to get the message across. The first film has had around about 100K views on TikTok, Facebook, Linkedin, YouTube etc., and that's a sort of number I am thinking .... hell, this might just start to make a difference.

And yes, someone else pointed out that my unique position ... not a member of the profession, but someone who has worked alongside it for a great many years, gives me an insight that not many members of the public have AND the ability to speak my mind robustly (Representative orgs would unlikely be comfortable speaking as candidly as I can, and even if they did, it would be seen as biased coming from, say, BVNA).

Another thing - I wanted to mention you vet nurses in this film, but it's just SO tight having to squeeze everything into 60 seconds. After doing take 1 (and 2, and 3, and 542,) I end up cutting out single words here and there just to get it down by fractions of a second!

Anyway, my question is, what subjects could I cover to champion the role of nurses? What would make your life easer? For example, a receptionist told me its not uncommon for MOPs to treat her like shit, and then be all smiles and butter wouldnt melt when the vet walks in the room. Is there a similar thing going on with nurses. Or other issues I can address. I can think of a general film I could make, but would be nice to have a series.

As soon as I viewed this, I shared the hell out of it. So refreshing to hear someone standing up for us, as it’s so hard for us to do as we have to remain professional (which in some circumstances can be very difficult)

Personally the thing I find the hardest is non payment of bills!
comments like “oh I’ll be back tomorrow”

I would love to go to Tesco with a full trolley and walk out saying I’ll be back tomorrow .

its just that when tomorrow comes the insurance will pay .. or not and then it’s really hard to regain the cost of treatment.

clients expect to pay a plumber an OOH fee to stop a leak, but for some reason we have to battle to get paid for treatment and services provided

Because we are lucky enough to have the NHS, clients have no idea and don’t appreciate the costs involved in medicine

Been really taken aback by the reaction to that film.

Gone quite viral for a veterinary film (I think we are running at around 100,000 views across all the different social media platforms so far, the big one being TikTok).

And I've had lots of nice messages from vets and nurses, which is lovely - I feel like I am doing something useful here (which is a rare thing!)

What about clients who think its ok not to pay at the time! i mean you wouldn't go in to your local tescos and say ill pay next time i come in, or sorry dont have the money today.

Clients who treat the receptionists like dirt but are then nice as pie to the vet.

Great! To the point and 'light' enough with humour to be watchable by even the most cynical. I'd love to see one explaining to clients about the bulk buying discounts that online pharmacies get, compared to our veterinary wholesalers where some products are more expensive for us to source. I work for a tiny independent ambulatory practice not a corporate, so maybe its even harder as we don't benefit from the 'big group' buying powers (and being equine as well I'm not sure how this situation compares for small animal practices?) but this is a thing that lots of clients don't seem to understand. We are not trying to rip them off, but we literally cannot buy Regumate for example from our wholesaler at anywhere near the price that some of the online pharmacies are selling it for.

Laughed out loud. In fact, that same though went through my mind this morning. Because of my independence and the fact that I am accountable to nobody, I can speak more plainly than even the representative organisations. Against that, I feel a real responsibility to try and get it right!

This first series is about why vet bills have gone up so much. But you've got me thinking about a second series already, which could be on a more general theme of 'how to have the most productive relationship with your vet / nurse'.
