I was wondering if within the community there are any other Farm Animal RVN's? I work solely in Large Animal practice and would be keen to connect with others who are in the same area of clinical practice. It would be great, if in the future, there

RE: Any Farm RVNs out there?

Thank you so much!

RE: Any Farm RVNs out there?

Dan Lidgbird Finally (!) We work so hard for all of our qualifications and there are repercussions if this goes wrong yet it seems those that are not qualified that are allowed to do this have no repercussions if it goes wrong. I feel having RVNS in large animal practice can only be a good thing as it can create more work for the practice but the load spread over the usable bodies and in turn makes more money for the practice. As shown with equine and small animal practice they are needed for farm animals too its just whether the practice can justify the requirement for one.

RE: Any Farm RVNs out there?

I took a job as a TB Tester and it has grown from there. It would be great if there was a RVN pathway for Farm because I really think if allowed, we could make a great impact especially on animal welfare.

RE: Any Farm RVNs out there?

This is something that really winds me up. I worked hard for my qualification and yet there are practices allowing lay people to take blood samples from calves etc. It is just so demoralising when I’ve tried hard to make a bit of a dent in this area.
I am the only RVN on our large animal team and I do calf health routines, along with PD’ing, assisting with surgeries and knock down disbuds etc. I hope the amendments to the VSA mean that there could be more scope for a Farm RVN

RE: Farm RVN

Mixed practice here and our nurses do get involved in some farm stuff. Our RVN can AI cows, helps with ops, bloods etc.

The biggest problem seems to be these big farm practices employing 'vet techs' and, in my opinion, letting them break the law. They shouldn't be going out and taking bloods, dehorning calves, but a blind eye seems to be turned. If you look on many of these big practice websites they are vague about what the techs do, but I know of many doing things that I personally believe go against the VSA. Why train a nurse/employ a nurse if you can grab a farmers son/daughter and put them to work the next day?!

There would be an outcry if this was small animal practice.

RE: Farm RVN

It is very hard to find a practice that would need an RVN on the large animal side as usually it is someone who can assist the vet with no prior veterinary knowledge or the vets are self efficient. This was an area I was keen to diversify in but never had the chance as there were no jobs asking for an RVN on the large animal side. I was very fortunate in my first job as a qualified RVN that they used their small animal nurses for the equine and livestock work too but since then have had no luck in such position unless I was to become a licensed TB tester. I am currently doing equine nursing again but I feel this is the closest I am going to get to livestock again as a nurse. I would hope one day in the future this would be considered as a pathway for RVNS but with how far behind equine practice and only just allowing nurses to do more in this area it will be a long time until this happens in farm animal nursing.
