I've been a qualified vn for 25 years and am nearing 60 now.
Due to the long hours on my feet and heavy lifting my hips are worn out and I need one replaced.
I can't stand for long, or even lift a bag of shopping without severe pain, there

RE: Job ideas needed

So many roles I’ve looked up require you to have a degree as well I’ve found. I too struggle physically. I’ve coped over the last few years of nursing by moving to part time hours to try and fit in physiotherapy and rest. But it turns out that’s not sustainable either.

RE: Job ideas needed

Have you considered any of the companies that do tele medicine, phone consults triage etc....?

RE: Job ideas needed

Hi, if you’re on Facebook it might be worth posting on vets stay go diversify. Often the team there can suggest roles that might suit, it seems to me that you have a lot of experience that might be worth a lot to the right employer. Good luck with your search, I really hope you find something, it sounds like a stressful time for you.

RE: Job ideas needed

Indeed. They are wiggling out of permanent contract because I have been externally funded. As you are aware working in academia, once the funding dries up, that's your lot.

I'm actually going to a meeting tomorrow with the Union, and know the legislation, but it's not hopeful because I don't have a PhD and, unless one is a lecturer, there's little chance of retention.

I sort of painted myself into a corner as I have a particular specialism with only very few jobs worldwide and my MSc is in Biosciences. I'm a Home Office licensee too, but really don't want to go over into end point schedule 1 type research. Not fun.

I currently work 35 hours as full time, which is just manageable with careful attention to mobility and medication scheduling. Any more is unfeasible.

I'm looking for home working, desk based, possibly hybrid if local.

Nothing active for me now ️

RE: Job ideas needed

ah, that's not going to work then :( On Indeed Jobs I think there was a weekend job doing phone triage for Veteris, £14ph. Obviously not the income you seek but something on the side perhaps while you look for something else? I see you have teaching support experience - might be worth looking at the autism support roles for HE students that are advertised. It seems to pay well and is remote. I looked into it and the basic qualification some expected cost about £300 to do. Your wider experience here is also invaluable I suspect.

Indeed Jobs is your best friend here potentially. Quite a few remote roles come up related to animals, particularly for the charities.

Good luck!

PS. If you have been employed as a RA in the same workplace for 4yrs+ you might find under UK legislation that you should be on a permanent contract by now and could access the 'at risk' register in your university workplace, gaining priority for any suitable roles. Just because the uni has you on a temp contract doesn't mean this is necessarily legal. If you are in the union I would discuss this with them. If you were at my workplace if your health caused issues for you doing your current job you can join the 'at risk register', slightly more problematic for other situations, but I would look into this more as it may be a stone worth overturning.

RE: Job ideas needed

Thanks for the opportunity Louise but I can't travel away from home. The roles are formally work from the office, but lots of us work mainly from home, and are lots of flights between Bristol and Edinburgh, and a tram direct between airport and to within about 10 mins of the office. https://www.ed.ac.uk/clinical-sciences/edinburgh-surgery-online I will know more over the next month, but your post suggests you may have background skillsets of interest to us, and an immediate start type person could be very attractive, and if you might fit I will happily let you know when/if the role is agreed/finalised so that you can apply. It is very likely that the post will be advertised external. Best wishes, Louise
