However, I am confused about all the options and what they all mean.
I have seen on the University of Glasgow website the MSc/PgDip/PgCert which I kind of understand, but different

RE: Advanced Nursing Options and Post-nominals

HI Amy,

I am currently on the Masters pathway for Advanced veterinary nursing at Harper Adams. For me to do this I am completing 2 x CertAVN certificates to get enough credits to do the masters module. I have chosen to do mine in Anaesthesia and Analgesia and Pain Management. I will get the nominals CertAVN and blue badges to show I have done an advanced qualification.

Both of these qualifications can be taken separate and you will get a CertAVN. you can do these Graduate (level 6) or Post Grad at level 7. I can only comment on what I am doing and from Harper Adams. My advice would be to look at the website and see what you fancy. www.harper-adams.ac.uk/.../

The CertAVN replaced the DipAVN qualification as the blue badge qualification

There are other qualifications that i don't have alot of info on such as Veterinary Technician Specialist- VTS. I now VTS is an american qualification that is done in a particular subject and is starting to come over here. Look at the NAVATA's Website https://navta.net/

RE: Advanced Nursing Options and Post-nominals

To add to Nessas comment, I would first look at what interests you, and then look at all the options for that subject. Doing (for example) an anaesthesia cert if you’re not really interested in the subject is going to be a struggle to stay motivated, especially as you’re doing them alongside working. Look at something you can apply in practice, that you are passionate about ideally. Also one thing to bear in mind is that there will be a minimum level of qualification needed to do some of the courses. I qualified under a diploma, and had to do a level 5 dip avn, but could then go into the level 6-7 pgcert AVN, they wouldn’t have let me do that level straight off as it’s a massive academic leap.

lastly, I did my additional quals in Harper Adams, so if you have any questions on that uni, please ask!

RE: Advanced Nursing Options and Post-nominals

Hi Amy,

I know looking at all the different options can be confusing. It really depends on what you are interested in and then looking at the course content to see if you feel able to complete it and / or if the content interests you.

In terms of the post nominals that you have mentioned, C & G is City and Guilds, Cert VNECC - Emergency and Critical Care certificate usually Vets Now. NCert - nursing certificate and Cert VNE - I think is the old version of Cert AVN - Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Nursing.

Sometimes, you have to attend some practical days so it is worth thinking about that when looking at the location of the certificate provider.

I hope this is helpful.
