What's changed? Are clinics still short staffed and stretched with a lot of stress?

RE: Is it still a struggle in practice?

It depends on the location in the country regarding the 'saturation'of RVN locums as in my area there is plenty of work but have heard that in the northwest there is not much locum work at the moment. I am having to turn down work as I am so busy at the moment.

RE: Is it still a struggle in practice?

depends on the practice, some places are still constantly advertising. Others hold on to their staff well.

I think the locum market has become saturated mainly RVN's, but vet locus are still in demand.

RE: Is it still a struggle in practice?

That's great. Thanks for all your inputs. I was locuming before so I think I'd definitely consider that route again.

RE: Is it still a struggle in practice?

I agree with the others who have answered here. Definitely practice dependant. Before I was forced onto long term sick by sepsis I was locumming and absolutely loved being a vet nurse, even with the ssues of staffing and stress. Hope that helps

RE: Is it still a struggle in practice?

I think in general there is still a huge problem with retainment within the industry as a whole, RVN wages are improving and advertising of said wage is becoming more the norm rather than 'competitive salary' being advertised. Depends on the team as others have said, there will always be busy/stressful days but that isn't necessarily due to staffing. Locum work is probably best way to judge for yourself.

RE: Is it still a struggle in practice?

I would say it depends on the practice as I have been in busy well staffed practices and the stress environment has been quite high but also been in smaller short staffed practices and it has been low stress, I have also experienced it being the other way round too. I agree with Katherine that locuming is definitely a good way to suss a practice out to make sure it is right for you but you can also ask for a 'trial' day to help make your decision.

RE: Is it still a struggle in practice?

Id say it varies, I am locumming and have been at short staffed practices and well staffed practices recently. Locumming is quite a good way to check out these things before getting a permanent role somewhere?
