Going independent means you have full control of everything. Think back to all the fab vets you have worked with and chances are there will be one who is also thinking of setting up. Alison lambert (onswitch) runs a fantastic course for those thinking about setting up.

RE: Wanting to own a practice
I think for me it's either own my own practice and provide a gold standard, enjoyable place for people to work
It's one model for running a practice, but a very expensive one. You would need to set up in a very affluent area, great shop front, parking. You would need an exceptional vet (or two) who the clients loved and told all their friends about. I imagine it as one of those 'free coffee' while you wait, 20 min appointment type practices. You would need all the facilities.

Personally, I feel the desire to try and provide this elusive 'gold standard' of care is one of the big issues in practice - for both practical and financial reasons it is out of the reach of many clients. What exactly is it, anyway? An example - some would say pre anaesthetic bloods are 'gold standard' (and they are practically routine in the US), but the evidence base is much more sketchy and in young fit animals adds little or nothing to the safety of the procedure. I think if we lower our expectations to doing the best for the animal, under practical and budget constraints, then we can sleep easy at night - even if every young dog with epilepsy doesn't get an MRI scan and every bad elbow doesn't get a CT scan.

I think there is a lot more scope in the market for the 2nd type of practice, and can be done on much more of a budget.

I would avoid the JVP model and see if you can find a vet you really get on with and start something together. My advice would be to work with them for a minimum of 2 years as people change with time.

RE: Wanting to own a practice

I was also going to suggest have you looked at the joint venture partnership through V4P

RE: Wanting to own a practice

i know a few nurses who have gone through vet4pets partnership.
