I am currently a locum nurse and although there is no set 'time' for you to become a locum I would just be a little bit careful and make sure you are up front with you being a new grad and what your skills are as I have seen so many new grads try the locuming without any experience as a qualified before locuming and they have been over whelmed as most practices just expect you to know what you are doing in most aspects of nursing even those that you may not have had exposure to yet. That being said a lot of practices are very nice and will train you/teach you whilst you work there so do not worry too much. I would say until you try it you will never know whether it is for you or not. Don't forget you can always try locuming and if it doesn't work for you there are plenty of full time jobs out there . I would say if you are a new grad and if you were to become a locum you may find it easier and better to do month long blocks rather than a couple of days here and there until you get more experience and used to the locum world but it is entirely up to you.

Have a look on Facebook there is a page called British Veterinary Locum Association there are lots of helpful guides and people on there that can help with any questions you may have.

Good luck in whatever you decide!

RE: How to become a locum RVN

Hello Tia,

Not sure whether you are still looking and have taken the plunge into locuming yet? It is a very good way of seeing lots of different practices. From my experience usually nurses locum after a year or two of graduating. That said we have placed a lot of RVN's as locums for 3-6 months after graduating while they took their time to find the right practice. Some just work as 'professional' locums which are long term. There are pro's and con's to both sides- but you certainly seem like you have the right reasons for trying it- worst case scenario is you do a few weeks ,don't like it and get a perm job after....

I learnt so much so quickly. I did settle in a permenant job after 1.5yr of locoming. I returned a few years later for another 5years of locuming. I see so many student qualify, stay in that same practice or find their first one as a RVN and get stuck their, have massive anxiety to move on as that is all they know. It will depend a lot on your personality. Always be honest about your experience and knowledge level and locuming would be a great opportunity. It wont work for everyone however.

RE: How to become a locum RVN

If you are on Facebook look at the British Veterinary Locum Association page. They have lots of information and help.
I would probably agree with giving yourself a few months employed first. Many locum jobs are like hitting the ground running. I would never dissuade a fellow nurse from anything and if that is what you fancy go for it

RE: How to become a locum RVN

To be honest with you, I would spend some time in an employed role getting to know the job before branching out as a locum
