It's all dependant really.

If you are within IR35, and aren't going to pay me on your payroll, I'm going to charge around £20-22 an hour. This is because via an umbrella company, I lose 33% of those wages. So that becomes a lot less at about £500 a week. Which isn't exactly huge, taking into account no perks of security /holiday etc.

However if you are somewhere outside of IR35. I'd do for a fair bit less, if you pay on time of course

This is in London however. Where my rent, bills, food, travel etc comes to around £1400 a month.

So for my non essentials, debts, savings, etc, £600 a month isn't a huge amount or mind blowing is it? For working my butt off as a professional?

FYI I end up with about 100 quid a month free, working 40 hr weeks as a locum RVN.

Don't you think we deserve better than that?

Hence why in moving out of London in a month and a half. :)

HI, I'm a head nurse who has to use locums occasionally. Rates seem to range currently form £16-£20 p/hr. Obviously employers are going to want as reasonable a rate as possible but that said recruitment is an issue so locums are quite sought after!

Hello, I'm an experienced RVN and I did regular locum jobs over the summer at £18-£20 per hour. Im in the South West of England. Hope that helps.

LOL, I bet he did! The bottom end of that works out at about 39.4k for a 40hr week, with 5 weeks holiday. £30ph works out at circa 56k! More than my basic salary as a university senior academic with a PhD and about 15 years experience! I might re-enter clinical nursing with pay like that!!! Lot less stress and paid overtime, whereas in my role I often end up working a 50 - 60 hr week.

Wow! Was that for regular day shifts, Selena? Or OOH/weekend work? I knew it had gone up a bit because of the IR35 stuff.

we have had a couple of locums offer their services at a rate of between £21-30 per hour. We haven' t needed a locum luckily

Someone must have an idea what is currently being charged? What are practices employing locums currently paying? There is a FB group for locums where this sort of thing gets discussed but I haven't had any updates for a long time so think it is maybe defunct now. It was set up to discuss IR35 changes. I most recently locummed the odd day shifts (weekends) in the summer (reasonably experenced nurse but nothing 'special' if that makes sense) and without even asking was offered £20ph in Scotland for shifts that needed covering in 1 week or so. I was getting £15 - 18 about 5 years ago when I did a lot more locum work and that was week and weekend days (no nights and no on call). I am not your best guide though as very piecemeal locum work now. Good luck with locumming - I don't think you will be short of work!
