Now I'm not talking about clients that are registered at another local practice and they just want to come to you because

RE: Emergencies

Duty of care - but Ben O makes a valuable point here, particularly at the moment. Plus, probably impaired judgement or maybe even an inexperienced receptionist trying to protect overworked vet staff so made a bad judgment in good faith. I once turned away a seizuring dog as a very new trainee nurse on reception with a full diary and because the owner didn't seem stressed and I didn't realise the implications. It had been seizuring for 3hrs!!! That was about 23yrs ago - I don't do that now, which is just as well as I locumed for Vets Now

RE: Emergencies

I'm guessing weekend, limited staff , appointments rammed to the gunwales - probably with twice the number of appointments there should be

RE: Emergencies

To look at it from another angle, one of those four practices genuinely may not have had a member of staff available to see them even if they were obliged. It wouldn’t be wrong to say there isn’t a pair hands that aren’t already deep in an emergency, it’ll be better to try another surgery on close proximity.

However, in all likelihood it’s someone being turned away. Your right we do have an obligation to see emergencies, however are these calls getting to a clinical team member?…

RE: Emergencies

This was first thing in morning before all the practices in my area had even started consults but would have had their phones over. It was just before 9am and I know all my local practices working hours.

I was honestly just so disgusted with the fact that this poor dog was being denied emergency first aid treatment.

RE: Emergencies

What a sad story. We would be more than happy to see the emergency, providing we had staff available to assist/weren't currently dealing with another emergency. Or if we were unable to, then we would give details of other nearby clinics to try.

In my opinion this is a situation that will be happening more with people going on staycations. We need to sort out some sort of care for them, otherwise the animals will ultimately suffer.

RE: Emergencies
FYI - I told them to come straight down but we were the 4th practice they had called as others had said no despite the injuries.
Quite shocked to hear that. I wonder if it's a symptom of the staffing crisis.
