I'm building a bank of youtube videos for my clinic on how to do certain things for their pet (exotics nursing so its syringe feeding, applying rear guard etc.). Also done oneon how to place an IV ina rat for vets/nurses. Based in South Wales. Let me know if I can help? I can't do dog work but I have my own cats so happy to do get cat stuff (I'm a crazy cat lady so !!)

Sorry - has been such a hectic week. First recovering from back surgery, then having to take daughter to London for gene therapy, then yesterday having to take her again, and in the meantime wanting to get our first VN-made film published and out of the door.

Herein lies a huge problem - you are trying to attract normally reticent to be 'on the stage' RVN's!! We usually expertly beaver away furiously but avoid the spotlight... And yes, I know that doesn't help highlight our case!!

Can I perhaps put it put there in Facebook Land for you? Might attract more interest?

This is a very old problem and it’s sad to see this sort of course still being offered, with the implication it might lead to qualification as a veterinary nurse. As others point out, the disclaimer comes somewhat late in the sales blurb but it is there, and is quite clear. At least this one, unlike some in the past, doesn’t purport to be a regulated qualification. The RCVS is limited in what it can do; it can’t stop such courses being offered but it can, and has in the past, offer “buyer beware” advice. Perhaps this needs reiteration for a new generation of potential RVNs.

We have that for you right here.

I can give you the advice from a filming perspective. We're going to put all content on our YouTube Channel, Brains and Drains, of which Alasdair Hotston Moore FRCVS is the clinical ed. He's a terrific chap. He peer reviews everything and will make sure everything is up to scratch.

I think if we take this idea further, then I might start a secondary channel to share the content on, one specifically for owners.

So the nursing demonstrations have two audiences: One is the pet owner, and the other is the fellow vet nurse. I wonder if that needs two films of the same thing. One explaining to a peer how to do it, the other explaining to a pet owner what is being done. It is a slightly different thing, but maybe an explanation for a vet nurse is fine as an explanation for a member of the public too.

Do I make sense?!

The problem is that practice waiting room posters are not going to achieve very much on their own. Depending on design, they won't even be hugely noticed.

The solution is to find the things that people are interested in, make content on those subjects, and use the opportunity to deliver the messages you want.

I think one of my ideas is actually, er, quite a good one (er, although I do say it myself), which is to build a bank of youtube videos showing veterinary nurses demonstrating things pet owners want to know about.

Even without doing anything else, that does two things. Firstly, it gives a platform from which to shout what you want to say about your profession / qualification. Secondly, it actually demonstrates what you can do.

We had a couple of interesting films entered into our competition the other week. Hard to get people to film themselves, and harder still to do it well, so I plan to start making some myself very soon. Once I can walk like a 50 year old again (as opposed to a 95 year old which is how I feel after my op!)

I really need RVNs to volunteer as film stars, though. Ideally in the South West!

If our own governing body and representatives don't take it seriously then sure as hell nobody else will either.

Petitions - ok in the early days of petitions they could have made a difference but they are becoming a bit old hat now and there are hundreds if not thousands that get kicked out every year.

The one thing I will say is whatever the fight is for just make sure it is something actually wanted by all of the qualified nurses and not just the ones with the loudest voices. Don't repeat previous mistakes, don't assume we all want the same - and the only way you will find out what people want is by asking.If nobody bothers to find out what everybody wants then it will end with lots of small ineffectual splinter groups, Initially I supported the original campaign but when I saw some of the stuff being 'tacked' onto it I just walked away.

Because anyone caring for an animal during it's recovery is nursing it. You look after plants or children in a nursery. You nurse a baby.

Unless prefixed with something that precludes people or animals (eg tree) then no one else should be doing surgery.

In human medicine 'nurse' not protected, but 'registered nurse' is (as is RVN).

I think you're barking up the wrong tree trying to protect a verb, much better raising awareness of what a RVN is and what makes them special from the rest of the nursing team.

Protect the Title Veterinary Nurse

Protect the title ‘Veterinary Nurse’ so that only those that have undertaken an accredited course and sat examinations and registered with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons should be allowed to call themselves a Veterinary Nurse

It is now 60 years since the first veterinary nurse course was started and in that time we have become a regulated profession. As such we are accountable for our actions, are required to undertake a set amount of learning per year, ensuring that we keep up to date with policies and procedures. As a regulated profession we can face disciplinary action from our governing body. Yet with all this we still have not got a protected title.

The RCVS took steps to protect the title around 5/6 years ago, basically the Government said no as they have a “deregulatory agenda”

The Government response seems odd as at there had already been a step in the human medical field to protect allied health profession and dental titles.
