My route to veterinary nursing hasn’t been an easy one. I worked in a practice for 2 years but ultimately left because of the management/manager who was a complete bully. I moved into a nursing assistants role and while I enjoyed the job, the team

RE: Affording college

I seen an ad recently looking for a student nurse at vets4pets kirkcaldy

RE: Affording college

Hi. Just tell the prospective jobs there is no opportunity to train where you are - its a common theme

You need to be employed at your TP, or doing a clinical placement. Employment - for an apprentice- which means your fees are paid, and you get paid for your time in practice and time in class.

Other types of placement aren't paid, I don't believe - so maybe an apprenticeship is the way to go ?

You can't work as a nurse and do medications etc at a second practice outside your TP

I worked at my practice full time & put myself through collage, I had various other jobs in pubs, clubs and nursing homes all the way through, but casual work due to the demands of the vets hours. However I was paid a normal wage wage at the vets & I put myself through collage, and paid my own fees (though I worked 5 full days and went to class on the 6th ) and every other weekend - so 1 day off a fortnight - which was usually filled with shifts at the pub & nursing home - it was brutal

Some practices prefer to use unpaid staff on placement, but i wouldn't describe Apprenticeships as rare, especially since the levy

RE: Affording college

I feel for your plight, it’s all too common. I would encourage you (as others have said), to distribute your CV, with a cover letter that outlines your needs and what you bring. I would distribute it far a wide and be prepared for either a bigger commute or a relocation.

When apprenticeships were more of a thing, it was easier for people in your situation. However they’re very rare now.

RE: Affording college

The course itself covers your placements so the clinical experience isn’t the issue. More it’s a full time Mon-Fri 8-5 role and obviously will include study at home so not sure it’s even feesible to have a part time job as well.
i haven’t sent my c.v to other practices. I’m not 100% what to say as technically already at a TP but no opportunity to train there.
I do have some experience in the field and in other roles - would be a mature student.

RE: Affording college

I’m in central Scotland. When I started in the 80's with my training this was always a problem - and has never changed in all that time. If you are able to move around you stand a better chance. Some practices offer accom with the job and if you offset that with being on call sometimes its worth considering

RE: Affording college

Difficult because of Covid, and possibly not feasible to do - but actually call and leave a physical CV.
Would you be entitled to an advanced learner loan? I think you only have to start paying that back when you earn over £28k a year and unless you live in London you'd probably never earn that much so wouldn't have to pay anything back
