I am in need of a little help.
My practice is looking in to employing 2 night nurses with a 7 on, 7 off. We are based in the South West. My questions is, what range of salary would be acceptable?

Any advice /guidance gratefully received

RE: Night Nurse Salary

It really does depend on the practice and area. I have done it for a referral which was very busy and had multiple nurses on the service. Even then we were understaffed and the money I got was not enough. About 26K. Its a brutal shift pattern especially if its a busy service. I spend most of my 7 off recovering. I's not do it again and certainly not for anything less than 30K. The issue you will have if you are only employing 2 is what happens when one nurse is on holiday or ill. Might be better as a 4night/3night split

RE: Night Nurse Salary

Thank you. This is so helpful. We are a busy first opinion with all the mod cons. Our OOH are just getting busier and busier. I think initially it will be mainly inpatient care overnight and obviously any emergencies throughout the night. I agree with you regarding salary and fair wages, you make a good point.

I am so grateful for all the information. It has really helped me to confirm how we got forward.

It's very much an awake shift! We have patient checks every 2 hrs, and there are always patients in as the OOH covers not just us but all the partner practices in the area. We're not a referrals but a busier and more equipped first opinion hospital.

Clients are charged a set amount for if their pet is in throughout the night, I believe this may be different for critical monitoring Vs 'routine' (routine being every 2 hrs).

The phone is connected all night so we have quite a few appointments, some admits and occasional surgery. So I will get the commission on anything like that. (I don't think I made it clear in my original reply, but there is 1 vet and 1 nurse working throughout the night together - so perhaps a slightly different set up to what you'll be doing).

Perhaps if you're setting up more of a night time monitoring shift than having patients coming in and out, you may feel inclined to offer a lower salary? My job would be a lot easier not having to worry about the phones or potential emergencies coming down.

Although I'm all for nurses being paid a fair wage, and frankly if you're working unsociable hours, nights (which are proven to be bad for your health), and have the responsibility of keeping patients alive then the nurses should be paid as much as the practice can afford. But that's an argument for another day!

RE: Night Nurse Salary

Hi Rgreeny,

This is super helpful. Thank you. Please may I ask, is your shift a sleeping shift or a waking shift? Do you know if clients get a charge if patients checks are required during the night? Where you mentioned a 'commission' is that for emergencies that come into at night?

Sorry for all the questions. :

RE: Night Nurse Salary

Hi Ems.

Thank you for informing me of you (old) salary. It is always a bit of an awkward questions. Much appreciated, Faye.

RE: Night Nurse Salary

Hi Sal.

Thank you for the feedback. Yes, that is my concern - That 7 on 7 off is too much. I know for sure I wouldn't be too keen to work it. But I guess for some it suits their lifestyle. Either way, I appreciate your thoughts x

RE: Night Nurse Salary

I also used to work 7 on, 7 off. They were 12 hour nightshifts and as Sal said, they were brutal. I was on £30k a year and that was based in the South Lakes/Yorkshire area.

RE: Night Nurse Salary

Hi,

I'm a night nurse working 12 hour shifts, 7 on and 7 off in central London. I earn over 30k plus 2k London weighting on top, I also get a small commission for everything we see in the night.

When I applied for the job there were similar positions going in Kent and outside London which offered a bigger salary (without the London weighting), as well as 7 days on and 14days. Not having a long commute was more important to me than the money though!

If you'd like to know more specifics please feel free to send me a message x

RE: Night Nurse Salary

no idea as to wage but 7 on and 7 off is a killer from experience
