I am looking for some guidance from those in the industry regarding RVN career progression.
I have been qualified nearly 3 years (so not very long). Since leaving university, and working full time in a first opinion practice I have slowly started

RE: RVN Career progression

ISFM do some really good courses and maybe you could become the feline nurse in your practice and work towards gaining cat friendly status.

Imo the world's your oyster as there are tonnes of courses and qualifications you can study. With regards to the cost, if I've ever wanted to do an expensive course I've discussed it with my boss, explained what benefits it could bring to the practice and once they agreed to pay for it I signed an agreement saying if I left before x amount of time I'd pay x amount back for the course fees

RE: RVN Career progression

Wow can't believe I didn't see that

RE: RVN Career progression
(small curries rabbits/guinea pigs)
Take a look at our BSAVA Vet Nurse Merit Awards on our website. There are lots of different subject areas and each award is worth at least 30 hours of CPD. We have some great speakers on board, many of whom are experts in their field! They are really well priced too.

You’re really not long qualified so don’t put too much pressure on yourself :) We learn and improve our general nursing skills every day whether we think we are or not, so you’re never standing still.
I did the C&G Cert in exotic species a couple of years back so that might be worth looking into if you like small furries.

RE: RVN Career progression

Hi Anne

I'm not 100% certain, however I do take alot of pride in looking after in-patients, so potentially medical? I love all things cat, but I do enjoy exotics (small curries rabbits/guinea pigs). I also feel like I want to be more confident with ECC (I have picked up shifts in an OOH for this).

I was also considering doing the top up to my FdSc degree (veterinary nursing) as it covers a few different subjects so I can then maybe home in on a particular area to focus on?

I'm just worrying about being stuck and before I know it it's been 10, 15, 20 years and I'm still doing flea and worm consults and not much else and void of the skills I was taught.

Thanks you :)

RE: RVN Career progression

What interests you as a nurse - ECC? Exotics? Anaesthesia? I'm currently doing the Vets Now ECC cert. Some practices might let you use a couple of year's worth of CPD allowance to do a course, which is what I'm doing. Good luck!
