I've just finished my 3 months at a new job and I failed my probationary period and they have extended it for a month.
They told me in a weird way like almost in passing oh by the way were extending your probationary period it's not your fault

RE: New job extended my probationary period.
But thankfully I don't work for you as I might of jumped off a bridge by now thanks.

I think that’s an awful way to respond to someone who is trying to help you.
Sophie Graham I tend to agree.

But, on the other hand, Anon is or was clearly feeling very down, and that can really affect the way we read things and reply to them. Perhaps with the benefit of hindsight and a reread when the storm has passed, she or he would probably realise they overreacted.

Meantime, struck by your very dignified reply Selena Carnell. There should be more people like you on social media

I think you need to try to get a meeting with all concerned to lay out expectations. If the HN & boss are supporting you then that needs communicating to whoever is doing the probationary reviews. So glad you found Vetlife supportive :) Please keep on accessing support. xx

I personally boolx Vets for not recording weights, I think its so important. Maybe a mentor at your work could help you to adapt to the requirements re record keeping and setting up.

I went from a 4 site, mixed, 7 day a week. 365 practice (yep we had a clinc christmas day ) to a 1 vet - 5 day -9 -5 practice, The transition wasn't always easy. But life is about experiences :) Good luck xx

RE: New job extended my probationary period.

Wow! I can't see that I wrote anything unsupportive in anyway!

In your original post you don't mention that you were working nights, if they have not communicated how they want things set up for the day shift how can you know if you are doing it right or wrong.

I have been in the same situation as this afew years ago, but my colleagues reported it to our area manager rather than discussing the issue with myself. I was doing things the way i had been previously taught in a referral centre and had no complaints, but some of the girls weren't happy. i found out via an mail that was incorrectly sent to me. Head office were disgusted with them for reporting such a trivial manner. which could have been sorted out with better communication, which sounds like this is happening where you are.

Luckily i have a great group of nurses who do work for me and find me extremely supportive as manager/nurse.

I also have a husband with mental health issues who has attempted suicide so that is not something i take lightly.

I wish you well.

RE: New job extended my probationary period.

I think that’s an awful way to respond to someone who is trying to help you.

RE: New job extended my probationary period.

Hi

I have been qualified for 4 years.

i can see you have no sympathy for me or can be of any help really.

I forgot to weigh an animal once or twice.

I did clarify they wanted more notes on the hospital sheets not that I had not filled them in at all.

In my opinion my notes were enough and I have checked this with the boss and he's happy with my notes.

And setting things up as it was already done and I have not been shown what they want done or how to do it.

So in my opinion it looked like everything was already set up for the next day and as I said I work nights so don't work the days at all at this practice.

Have you never had a bad day or a bad month or are struggling with life in general considering we are in our third lockdown of the year.

But thankfully I don't work for you as I might of jumped off a bridge by now thanks.

I have never had a problem in my previous jobs before I have had a couple of different jobs in different Vets.

I have had a chat with the HN and the boss and all seems not that bad but thanks for replying in such a unhelpful and unsupportive way to somebody having a tough time.

Thankfully I'm in a better place now :).

RE: New job extended my probationary period.

HI, you dont say how long you have been qualified.

We have extended peoples probation on a couple of occasions and always had a meeting with the person to discuss progress. If you are forgetting basic stuff ike weighing, hospital sheets and setting things up then that is fairly basic stuff which could also be pointed out during the course of the day, or if it is busy practice it means that someone else having to do double work.

From you writing you don't seem enthusiastic at all about the position, and saying you can just locum else where doesnt pin point the problem which could then follow you from job to job.

I would try and have meeting and get things written down. good luck
