My friend organises transport for special needs children and adults in my area and less than 10% of service users are currently using the service as TA's and PA's are not essential workers (unless they have paramedic training in which case they are being redeployed elsewhere). The decision here has been that as far as possible all special needs children stay at home because many of them have complex needs with high staff requirements and may also in many cases be immuno compromised (certainly 2 I know of that use oxygen). There is also a shortage of teachers with some having to isolate. Some of the schools have been closed completely. We have 2 TA's in the village that have lost jobs because they can not work because they are looking after their own children (they both work different places and with different age groups so couldn't even job share), before Christmas one of the TA's had to isolate because one of the children she works with tested positive, she was back at work 4 days and then had to isolate again because another child in the group tested positive - imagine what that has done to her income. It is having a knock on effect everywhere, it isn't just the vet world. I cannot think of a single person who hasn't had a problem with something

RE: Essential worker

Yes Arlo, the guidance last lockdown was only one parent needed to be a key worker, My husband is involved agriculture so was considered a key worker, but also my kids are in young carers due to my husbands bi-polar which also gave them an automatic key worker/child at risk placement. My daughter really needed the school contact last year for her anxiety and mental health, my son stayed at home. This year both kids are now at secondary and both happy to be home doing work. I feel bad as i am working 40+ hours a week, so is hubby. Luckily they are old enough to look after them selves to a point and my daughter is probably more mature than my son (12 next month and son 15)

RE: Essential worker
we're gettng reports across our vet group on schools responding differently to Veterinary staff
Its not just veterinary staff ... my daughter is at a special needs school where she is looked after one-on-one by a TA. The TA has been told her children cannot have a place unless BOTH parents are essential workers. That leaves us in the lurch because our daughter cannot attend school without the TA. And it completely contradicts the Govt, which says only one parent need be an essential worker.

People are making it up as they go along, I think the best thing to do in these circumstances is challenge the decision robustly!

RE: Essential worker

we're gettng reports across our vet group on schools responding differently to Veterinary staff, some are getting places for their Children and other not.
I just wanted to be sure we were talking about the same thing, because there are various pages of info which use different words and may mean different things (essential worker, critical worker, key worker), also published at different times (so may be outdated).

I assume you mean this list of critical workers: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-maintaining-educational-provision/guidance-for-schools-colleges-and-local-authorities-on-maintaining-educational-provision

I asked the College and it said that previous guidance on the subject remains in force: https://www.rcvs.org.uk/news-and-views/news/coronavirus-rcvs-and-bva-issue-joint-guidance-on-key-worker/

I agree with you, it does seem to be wrong that those in charge of preventing sickness/suffering in animals are not on the list of those who can still send their children to school.

RE: Essential worker

why arent we being recognised along side all others , just not right when we are all carrying on,

RE: Essential worker

Just look up whos classed as an essential worker, also we are not on government essential workers list!!

RE: Essential worker

Can you share a link - I thought vets were classified as essential ...
