They want me here 5 days a week and every 3rd Saturday as it is. Ontop of that im behind 100 hours of Offthe job training which is needed for me to pass and 80 hours of NPL are owed along with 3 days of overtime which I can’t take as there is only 2 of us working as nurses. Me and one RVN so if im not here there is nobody to help with the 5/6 ops booked per day :( scared il loose my funding and be not able to finish the course. A year is nothing in the grand scheme of things but there are simply not enough hours in a week for me to keep everything going :(

RE: Vet nurse student apprenticeship

Thank you yes thats what i feared that if I loose funding i loose my place. Currently there are 2 of us working as nurses 1 RVN and me as a student vn the other staff member is a receptionist who is going down to 3 days a week in August. Literally no way the place can run as it currently is if they gave me my college time off. It creates a bad atmosphere if i get time to do work as it makes more work for the RVN and we are all tired and stressed. Nobody will tell me straight if im going to get this time come September because I can’t see how it can possibly work and my boss knows il be doing remote lessons so think she will expect me to come in and use my own very limited time to complete all college work as she does currently. I just don’t have the hours in the day for it :(

RE: Vet nurse student apprenticeship

Getting the time off may be the solution you want to focus on - if you loose the funding, you loose your course. Now it may be that the issue of you having no time off for study can be concealed from the college, but they any still find out.

In principle, if it were me I’d want to spell it out to my employer that the time off is non-negotiable. As an apprentice, you should have a college tutor who is having meetings and catch ups with you employer, they should be able to address this with them also.

RE: Vet nurse student apprenticeship

A few options:

1. Talk to your boss (ask for a sit down meeting, and ideally take someone in with you - your clinical coach?). Explain the situation and see what they are willing to offer you. They either give you all the time off, some time, or no time.

2. If they don't give you any time in working hours then can you find time to do the work? Realistically 8 hours of college is probably 5 hours of undisturbed self study. Can you find the time to do that? It's only a year, and at the end you owe them nothing, are fully qualified and in demand?

3. Try and move practice? A 2nd year trainee is much more use than a new person.

4. Realistically you will have holiday - full time gets you 28 days. A day holiday per week gets you some time (or take a few days off to catch up)? Not like you will be going anywhere this year.

As a vet student most people would have done a lot more than 8 hours of self study per week, so it's not a vast amount in the grand scheme of things. Your 2nd year will fly by - Corona is mucking it up already. Knuckle down and get it done? That's what I'd do in your situation.
