Has anyone ever gone from being an RVN to a receptionist? I'm feeling like it's something I'd like to do but it's a pretty big pay decrease but I feel so much less stressed on reception than doing nursing duties and feel like I've totally lost my

RE: Has anyone gone from being an RVN to a receptionist?

What about a senior receptionist role?

RE: Has anyone gone from being an RVN to a receptionist?

I do have a really good friend who's also an RVN so maybe I'll have a chat with her and see if that helps

RE: Has anyone gone from being an RVN to a receptionist?

I always have huge respect for the reception staff in practice, it's a real juggle sometimes but you are often the guru when it comes to the clinics ins and outs!

I think if you think it'd make you happier then go for it but as a few people have mentioned, it might be worth while speaking to your HN about how you are feeling; they may be able to support you and your interests.

I have gone through a similar thing quite recently, a very rude clinician made me doubt myself and it took months to feel right again. I reduced my hours and considered leaving the profession but I'm glad I didn't in the end :)

A huge help for me was speaking to some close nurse friends of mine - do you have any supportive friends in the industry you can talk to?

RE: Has anyone gone from being an RVN to a receptionist?

James Colver Cert. I love learning so this I think may be the answer. Now I just need to find something that interests me

RE: Has anyone gone from being an RVN to a receptionist?

I've felt a lot like you with regards to not feeling like part of the team and not loving my job any more. The things that have helped me have been, like Sal suggested, finding something that excites or interests me and putting my energy into that. Recently I learned about haematology and blood film examination and it was like a spark reignited. That does require that you're working somewhere supportive though that lets you pursue your interests, and actually I think feeling that you don't get on with the team can really have a nasty impact on how you feel about your job.

I second talking to your head nurse. It might seem like an awkward subject, but I doubt you'll lose your job from being honest about how you feel. If your management are worth working for, they'll look for ways to help you, whether that be by finding a way to bridge the gap between you and your colleagues, or by supporting you in exploring a new aspect of your job, or even by helping you figure out what's happened to make you feel like this. At the very least, it might be worth trying some time in another team/practice before you take the pay cut and quit nursing.

RE: Has anyone gone from being an RVN to a receptionist?

I have felt this way a few times over the years and what I have done in the past is find an area I have some interest in and 'own' it - I just find out as much as I can about the area of interest both academically and practically and see how it can fit into the practice.
I just feel like I've completely lost my interest in being a nurse and can't put my finger on why exactly. I think a lot of it is the level of stress it brings. Maybe I've got compassion fatigue I don't know.

I don't look forward to going to work and have lost my self confidence in my skills and knowledge (nothing specific has happened to cause this). As an all rounder you might find you become quite a valuable member (not a less valuable member) of your team as you can cover which ever side is in most need of you and have a good overview of everything going on in the practice - your nursing side can become a lot more interesting when you spend more time with the clients and at the end of the day that is still a part of nursing duties, it might just get your enthusiasm a kick start.
