Are you allowing clients to stay with their pets or PTS without them present? Are you allowing just 1 family member to be present or none at all?

RE: Euthanasia in lockdown

really lovely letter from an elderly couple whose dog we pts'd after the lockdown thanking us. Sad circumstances as it was one of our old timers - also in the envelope a very generous cheque for the staff. The letter in itself made us feel appreciated and that people cared that we were trying to do our best - we have some really nice clients.

RE: Euthanasia in lockdown

we are not denying anyone the last chance to be with their pet, its hard enough for them. we've had numerous oap client pets pets this week, we are unable to do home visit pts, but have collected a couple of animals this week when the the owner has stayed at home. devastating from them and also very hard on staff mental health too.

RE: Euthanasia in lockdown

I agree, we are all being super strict with hygiene and social distancing but allowing one person to be present in the room with mask and gloves if available at such a difficult time seems reasonable both for the welfare of the animal and compassion for the owner.

Disagree 100%. We are trying our hardest not to make things any harder for people and pets going through this. We aren't keen on using extension sets as has been suggested elsewhere. I don't know about anybody else but at such a sad time, when you have cared for a pet for what could well be a decade it just seems a bit wrong to keep your distance and go all super clinical and scary at the end. I know people are worried about the virus being carried on fur but honestly is it so difficult lay a blanket between you and the animal. We did this with the cat we did last night and the owner really appreciated it. It was still possible for her to be present and touch her pet at the end, we didn't feel that we were unduly at risk. We keep our VCA who gets hysterical if people come too close to reception door let alone dare to touch the handle from the outside well out of the way!

RE: Euthanasia in lockdown

I'd rather do it in the back of a car and then as many people can be as close as possible. I agree with the concept of social distancing, but this would be one time that has to be broken IMO.

(there is no way I can lamb a sheep or caeser a cow and stay 2m apart. No way I can do a small animal op with a nurse).

I'll take the risk for the few animals that have to be PTS during this awful period.

I've heard online of practices taking animals away from owners and that's not OK in my book. Last memories of the long standing family pet.

RE: Euthanasia in lockdown

allowing 1 person to come into practice through the fire escape rather than the waiting room and to stand at a safe distance away from us.
