I thought they were one of the most popular qualification routes to rvn status.
Not heard much about vet skill or central qual.

I only see negatives in having multiple routes for qualification. I don't think that means it should be degree route only - that would be a huge barrier to entry for most people, not because they aren't smart or academic enough, but because it's unnecessary, staggeringly expensive, and would totally prevent people from pursuing vet nursing as a career change after already doing another degree. I think introducing the FdSc route in the first place was a huge mistake. It would have been better for everyone if they'd introduced a top up degree as an optional post diploma qualification, and built on it from there.
It would have been better for everyone if they'd introduced a top up degree as an optional post diploma qualification, and built on it from there.

That being said, it is true that diploma opportunities are like hens' teeth. They would be more abundant if the uni route didn't exist as those students are also used to fill staffing gaps, and since they are free and abundant and not bound by a permanent contract they may be more desirable in certain situations than paid diploma students (I could be wrong, but I think that practices have to keep training students to remain training practices). I do think that giving RVNs real professional status and responsibility and stopping lay people from doing RVN tasks such as anaesthetic monitoring would help, as it would make it harder for practices to use lay staff as cheap replacement for nurses, and would hopefully increase our value so that they are more inclined to put people into training.

I don't have much to say on different exam boards and course providers. As long as the course delivery is comparable and the same qualification is achieved within the same time frame, and no route gives anyone an advantage or disadvantage over the other, then I have no problem with it. I'm interested to learn about VetSkill's portfolio approach, but haven't had the training for it yet as it's not been available.

RE: Loss of city and guilds - any comments
Last year a third awarding organisation, also RCVS approved started awarding vet nursing too; VetSkill. The VetSKill qualification is more current and is a more blended approach, allowing your student more opportunity to develop and including SQP... its a more logical programme from my experience.

With City & Guilds bowing out, it leaves us with two awarding bodies for the level three. We'll be okay. In my opinion, the biggest disadvantage for people entering the profession appears to be the number of practices willing to provide training.
