Mainly urine samples handed in by owners at the reception desk to be tested. Has anyone found any good protocols that work for their practice in order to avoid this happening? Please share!

RE: Lab sample protocol

Hello,

All urine samples handed in at reception are put on the computer as a nurse appointment and it's arrived as an appointment waiting. All samples are stored in the fridge which is in a central room near the pharmacy so we all know where samples are awaiting testing. Once we have completed the test the appointment is marked completed and then urine is stored in the lab fridge for 1 week. This works really well and we rarely misplace a sample. Reception ensure that all samples are labelled and dated.

RE: Lab sample protocol

Hello

We have had a similar problem in the past. We now have a pee pot in the prep room area where the receptionists all know to leave any samples handed in. We have allocated the responsibility of arranging testing/sending to lab with our kennel nurse who will check the 'pee pot' periodically throughout the day. When the kennel nurse goes home it then becomes the late nurse's responsibility. This has worked well for us as I cannot think of any missing samples since we started doing it this way.
