If certain events naturally fall on the same days of the week and you have people naturally working the same fixed days of the week, it could be argued that part timers may have been discriminated against by the policy (i.e. that the practice requires CPD to be done on days off by certain employees). Equally, full timers could have a case for withholding of salary if some are being paid and others not, and the only determination is what days you work. Best to do an all or nothing and allow lie time or salary to attend for everyone, or for no one.

If work paid for CPD then no pay because work had already footed the bill for cpd which to me was a fair way of doing things. If you work for one of the big charities you tend to find that they give TOIL - but lets face it they generally have a shed load of staff - certainly the one I worked for you could easily have 5 nurses off on any one day with no impact on the amount of work done

TOIL can cause a lot of problems in small teams where you can wear yourself to a frazzle trying to cover those taking time off.

RE: Time off in lieu policies

If CPD falls on a day when you are not working then I wouldn't offer time off. The CPD benefits the employee just as much as the practice and if you leave you take those skills with you. As a professional you have an obligation to do it. We all do CPD in our own time - evenings and weekends.

If you work late then we would pay for the extra hours. Odd bits here or there then I will give the time back with an early finish when possible (stay 20 mins late one day, leave 20 mins early another). If you work a Saturday AM you can chose a half day the following Friday or be paid for the extra hours.

RE: Time off in lieu policies

i don't think we would offer it, as its not really working and the practice has usually paid for it.
