Apologies for the anonymous post! I found out two days ago that I'm pregnant (I assume around 4 weeks). I haven't told my boss yet but I'm planning to tell her on Monday when I'm next in. I'm a little stressed because I am the only nurse

RE: Pregnant and only nurse- HELP!!

red squirrel....

RE: Pregnant and only nurse- HELP!!
Else you could email it to me and then anon, you email me, and I will make the exchange (sounds very cold war, as in standing on a street corner, wearing a trilby, holding a manila envelope, what I mean is that I will just forward the file to you, anon).

RE: Pregnant and only nurse- HELP!!

It's your employers responsibility to look after you. make sure they do!

RE: Pregnant and only nurse- HELP!!
If you go through everything with your employer if you need any help I still have all my health and safety paperwork saved and can help with anything your unsure off.
Apologies for the radio silence.
I told my boss last Monday. She took it relatively well and congratulated me. I’m still a bit anxious though as she was a little dismissive of my concerns. She just said it’s too early for me to worry about anything or change anything at the moment (which I don’t think is true?). I think she thinks she’s being reassuring (as this was all said in a “don’t worry!” way rather than a “you’re being melodramatic” way) but I’d still rather go through all the risks and put a plan in place. When can I expect a risk assessment done? I have said I am happy to do this myself (as I did most of the standard risk assessments when we first started) but she said it’s too early to do one? Does this sound right?

As for X-rays, we usually stand about 2.5 metres away and wear lead aprons/thyroid shields the whole time our machine is switched on. Our machine is a low scatter one which I’m told the scatter only reaches 1 metre. Our RPA is happy with how we do things currently. My main concern at this stage really is the amount of masked GAs we do. I think I’ll have to buy a respirator as I don’t see another way around it :-( I‘d love to simply not do them but I don’t think that would be possible.
Thanks so much for your replies

RE: Pregnant and only nurse- HELP!!

Hi

I understand how you feel as I was a sole nurse working nights with a vet when I was pregnant it's not quite as bad as you think it will be.

Yes the most dangerous is gassing down of small exotics in a box as the box fills up then you need to get the animal out so you would not be able to help with any of this.

What the person above has said a student nurse would be perfect preferably a 2nd year student if you can find one so they can step in and help straight away or an animal care assistant as they are amazing.

x-rays were fine never had any issue any animal that would not stay still for an x-ray would need to be sedated this would be normal practice whether pregnant staff or not.

We would have an animal care assistant for a few hour in the evening and then 12pm-9AM we would be just a vet and a nurse.

Lifting heavy animals I will have to be honest I probably lifted more than I should of but my midwife said if I felt comfortable lifting and was not in pain but just to go careful.

Cat faecal matter I wore gloves and mainly just tipped the tray straight in the clinical waste bin tried not to directly touch it as much as possible.

It's about putting the safety of you and your baby first I know how difficult it is as I have been there.

If you go through everything with your employer if you need any help I still have all my health and safety paperwork saved and can help with anything your unsure off.

I did work for a big company at the time so they were very careful with pregnant women as in out job you need to be aware but it's not impossible to work sole charge as a veterinary nurse.

also once you get a midwife try not to let them worry you as mine was very worried to start with and I had to put her mind at ease.

RE: Pregnant and only nurse- HELP!!

don't know if this will help you or not? For the immediate future would a nursing assistant be the answer? Have you a local college as they may be looking for placements for students. Would certainly give you extra person power re heavy animals. Do you have any nurse contacts that may be looking for a few hours as and when until you need maternity cover? I managed to cover time I needed off for a medical issue this way and it made things a lot easier for the practice.

Respirators - I have used them a few times outside of work when I have been doing restorations, I know you can get different types but I struggle with them - to the point of passing out a few times. You may be better with them?https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00EJIMYX0/ref=sspa_dk_detail_2?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B00EJIMYX0&pd_rd_w=s9VME&pf_rd_p=1055d8b2-c10c-4d7d-b50d-96300553e15d&pd_rd_wg=TFLL9&pf_rd_r=RJ8FGQT8EN9PQN8NY830&pd_rd_r=66ebe2b7-e8ea-4e87-abf4-d2296c8d61c7&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFUS1pJSTlQNDE3WlcmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTAzNTAyMzNKRTlWWENaVENVRTkmZW5jcnlwdGVkQWRJZD1BMDUxODA4MzIzN1FEQlRJMzFWOTYmd2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9kZXRhaWwmYWN0aW9uPWNsaWNrUmVkaXJlY3QmZG9Ob3RMb2dDbGljaz10cnVl

these are the ones I have tried and found to be best but they they both have a fair amount of resistance if you aren't used to them. You may be safer without? and just making sure the room is well ventilated. Was your last gas monitoring within acceptable levels as this will give you an indication as to whether you really need a respirator. I assume you don't use nitrous as this could be an issue with pregnancy.

x rays - how often are you staying in the room? it is a real rarity for us. Can your RPA advise?
