Just wanted advice. I have always wanted to work in referral practice and always been my ambition. However unfortunately the nearest referral practice from my house is 1 hour and 30 minutes and thats without traffic! I am not in a position

RE: COMMUTING....

have You asked about condensing you hours into longer days. Sat 10 hr shifts and getting one day off a week? So in theory less travel per week

RE: COMMUTING....

I echo what Robyn

says. I've done hour long (plus) commutes by car and public transport in my time and, aside from being able to kip on public transport (excellent) or listen to my music in the car (good downtime) the journeying drained me eventually. I was living to work. Plus, after a hard day/night (and especially when driving) I am certain my concentration levels were not up to scratch on many occasions... after one very near miss I decided enough was enough.

I got a job locally and what a relief! I truly hadn't appreciated just how much the time, effort and money it was costing me to get to my job(s) before.

I also had more 'mojo' left to enjoy life outside of work. Winner!

Clearly it depends on the individual, but I do say travelling will wear anyone down eventually. Just be safe. Possibly stay a couple of nights at the practice or nearby if you can, to break up the travelling week?

So, my thumbs are up for moving closer to your dream job, breaking up the travelling week by staying on site/nearer for some nights or (best of all imo) creating the dream job much much much closer to home...or maybe settling for dream-ish?

Hth and good luck with whatever you decide to go for!

RE: COMMUTING....

I used to commute between Edinburgh and Glasgow when I first started working, on public transport so roughly a 2-2.5hr commute door-to-door depending on connections. Honestly, it was shite! I literally had an hour in the evenings between getting in the door and needing to go to bed, and weekends were spent catching up on sleep. I'm definitely not a career-first kind of gal so it was really rough for me and I ended up just moving closer and I'm still at the same job, but on the back of that I would always caution people against long commutes! They're so much more draining than you think they're going to be.

If it really sounds like your dream job, would it be worth asking them if they would offer some trail/seeing practice/locum shifts back to back to get a feel for the job and the commute?
