In response to the response on mobile veterinary nursing it will only be things like nail clip or administering medication that has already been prescribed by a vet, anything I feel they need to see a vet for I will refer them.

It will be basic stuff that any owner is able to do but maybe some owners struggling to do!

When I have done nurse clinics we get regular clients booking to see the nurse for administering oral, topical medications etc but they have already been prescribed and seen a vet so I have no intention of diagnosing etc, it will be basic services.

RE: SETTING UP A BUSINESS!

Hiya! There definitely is a business in this as I have done this myself.

As a student vet nurse I walked down the same street every day to work seeing many cats along the way, at the same time we were getting lots of calls for cat boarding or pet sitters. So I decided to flyer that one road and see if anyone would be interested in my services. That summer I had my first 5 clients! I then decided to expand my flyering to the roads I could reach, again more clients. These clients let their neighbours and friends know and more people would get in touch. What really took it to the next step was my work allowing me to display my business card at the front desk. As I didn't have a car there was a limit to where I could reach, and as I was working and studying I also didn't want to over stretch myself, so I would often have to turn people down.

One of the other nurses at my practice has turned this into her almost full-time job, she has her own website which brings in many customers. But she also works 2 days a week at the vets.

Now this was in central London, and as I have now moved away from there I'm currently on a cat sitting break. But that's not to say it's not in demand outside of the capital.

If you really want to start you can. Google other services in the area to see who's out there and going rates, invest in some self promotion (flyers, social media etc). And read up on taxes, and other legalities (insurance etc).

Feel free to dm me if you have any other questions x

RE: SETTING UP A BUSINESS!

Exercise caution if you wish to practice as a 'mobile veterinary nurse' - the RCVS have some thoughts on this and are quite restrictive in terms of what they are OK with..

https://www.vetnurse.co.uk/nonclinical/f/5/t/31252.aspx

RE: SETTING UP A BUSINESS!

So the first thing is to think about this backwards. How much do you want to earn per year? Lets say £24,000 as it makes my numbers easier.

Assume you have 4 weeks holiday per year.

You have 48 weeks to make £24,000, so £500 per week after all costs of the business are taken off, or £100 per day

What would be your costs to run these businesses? Insurance, fuel, car, uniform, consumables, advertising, telephone, CPD etc. You need to add them back on.

Lets allow £260 a month, but you can add in some real numbers (£65 per week)

Will you be able to work solid 5 days a week? Probably not, so maybe assume you do 4 days work a week and then you have slack to do a full 5 days.

That means, if we assume a 8 hour working day over 4 days, in 32 hours you need to earn £565 =£17.66 per hour PLUS milage

Maybe see how much work there is at £20 per hour?

You can work it through with different hours worked and different earnings. Just make sure to allow time to travel/down time/holiday in your finances.
