Currently, our system involves people staying if needed, with up to 30m not being counted then taking back TIL after 30m, although

RE: OOH and overtime payments/TIL

We dont stay on site, we come in and do checks. Usually one a night if we have an inpatient, and usually at 12am. We get £18 for this +mileage. We can claim overtime as TOIL if you stay later than 15min. We are not an OOH practice. This gets covered by our OOH vets, we just have inpatients, no unexpected calls

RE: OOH and overtime payments/TIL

where it has been just the odd time or really genuine cases then goodwill goes a long way - I agree with Apache on that one

RE: OOH and overtime payments/TIL

We don't routinely have nurses on call but if my wife and I (practice owners) are away we pay a nurse to be on call and sober if other vets needed assistance. We pay £80 for the weekend or £40 per night. We pay normal hourly rate on top for hours worked. If we call a nurse on a night or weekend when no retainer paid then they get half a day's pay.

Less than half an hour staying late I will give them back as an early finish ASAP. More than half an hour and pay at hourly rate. Very similar to OP.

Doesn't happen very often. If it was happening every week then need to look at things a bit harder. I'll generally let people go early if not much happening so I think I bank more time in terms of goodwill than I use up. I really don't think people mind staying for genuine cases. You can't take too much or people will get annoyed, it cannot be every night.

RE: OOH and overtime payments/TIL

Worked in places were overtime was TOIL but it really didn't work as people 'banked' the TOIL and took it usually in addition to holidays. We never got locum cover for holidays so that also usually resulted in somebody else accruing TOIL - and so it went on. Always understaffed because of TOIL but those working to fill the gap also accruing TOIL. Trying to get any semblance of a working rota was impossible

Retainers - staff taking it in turns to be on call on a rota system £20 to be on call and then paid normal hourly rate - grumbles because then people wanted the next day off and other staff didn't want to cover the extra work

Person on call gets a half day (leaves early) the next day if they have had to do more than an hours ooh but standard rate of pay and no retainer - grumbles because then everybody wanted to finish early if they were on call irrespective of being called out or not.

increased hourly rate for overtime, no retainer, no TOIL - was most popular with bosses but not nurses.

nurse call out fee charged to the client and paid to the nurse, normal rate of pay until 10pm and thing after 1.5 normal rate, no TOIL, no retainer - this was the most popular for both vets and nurses
